My Dell XPS15 laptop battery has died and will not recharge. the power cord is working. It does not have an external battery that I can remove and will not turn on. what do I do?
First thing: Unplug the adapter from the system and make sure the LED on it is ON. If it's not, the adapter is bad. Does the system power up at all? If it does, go into Setup (f2 at powerup) and verify that the AC adapter is recognized. If it's not, first thing to try is a new, OEM Dell AC adapter.
If that doesn't solve the problem, the next thing to replace (assuming the adapter isn't recognized) is the DC power jack. For that we'll need to know exactly which model you have (XPS 501x, 521, etc.).
If the system won't power up at all, but does recognize the AC adapter:
Though the battery is mounted internally, it can be disconnected from the mainboard. Remove the base cover and unplug it. If the system will power up with the battery disconnected, the battery is bad and will need to be replaced.
If a working adapter, and no battery or a good battery still result in no powerup -- after having replaced the DC jack, the mainboard is the bad part.
