m1330 - Estimated Ship Date vs. Reality

I ordered my XPS m1330 on June 30, and after the order they said my estimated shipping date would be July 17.  I was a little disappointed that it would take so long, but that's OK.

On 7/17 I got a message that my new date would be 7/24.  No reason for the delay, Dell told me--it's just a popular laptop.  OK, I said, I'll wait.

Today (7/24)?  Yet another message with a delay until 7/31.  Once again, the extremely unhelpful people on the phone tell me there are no part delays or anything else--they're just backed up, and there's no way they can give me an ESD with any basis in reality.

Has anyone ordered an m1330 lately?  Can I expect to get it while I'm young? Should I just cancel the order and buy a Macbook?

I ordered a 1530 on 7/1, ESD of 7/23, shipped on 7/22.  The reason that was given to some people was the recent fire at a battery factory, but I think Dell just wasn't prepared for the back to school rush.  The M1330 and 1530 seem to be very popular with the heading-to-college set.

I would call Dell ASAP to tell them you are willing to wait.  This is the mnessage I got one hour after I got the delay notification:

We want to inform you that your order was canceled under the Federal

Mail Order Rule. To learn more about the Mail Order Rule, click here.

We regret that there was a delay in processing your order and that we

were unable to connect with you to get your permission to continue

processing it. We hope you will consider purchasing with Dell for your

future needs. If you still wish to receive these or other Dell

products, we would be happy to serve you. Simply contact our Sales

Department by calling 1-800-289-3355, and the first available Sales

Representative will be eager to assist you. We value your business and

regret any inconvenience this may have caused.

After waiting 5 weeks, I had to reorder my M1530 and now it's due August 25th

They said nothing could be done to revive the order even though the salesman said earlier in the day that it was completed, being boxed and was ready to ship.

    So, please call them.

    Mike

I called and e-mailed just to be sure.  If they put me off next week I'm cancelling it.  It's one thing for it to take three weeks longer than they said to ship it (which was long enough to begin with); it's quite another to tell me that one week at a time.

What I kept asking the girl on the phone was, "The m1330s that are being shipped today--when were they ordered?"  This would be useful information.  If the ones going out today were ordered a few days before mine,  I know it won't be that much longer; if they were ordered in April, I might want to be concerned.  I don't think she even really understood my question.

If they know how many they can build in a day, and they know how many they have in front of mine to build, and there are no parts delays (and they assure me there aren't), it seems like they ought to be able to give me a fairly accurate idea of when it will be shipped instead of stringing me along a week at a time.

I ordered my 1330 on 6/12. Original ship date was 6/30, but it shipped early on 6/21.

Well then i'm glad i checked out best buy last night and found my 1330 for less $ and was able to take it home right then and their. I ordered mine thru dell on 7/11 and had a ship date of 8/4. It's crazy for $100 more I was able to get my printer, 4G instead of 3, and 3 years of BB service, rather than 2 yr of dell. Came in black only, but oh well. It's very pretty and I like so far.

I called today, and I was excited to find that my laptop had moved out of the "build" stage and is now in the "kitting" stage.  But when I asked to "learn more" about the kitting stage, they said it was the stage where all the parts for my laptop were rounded up and put into a tote so it could be built.

Uh, what?  Shouldn't that come before the "build" stage, where it has been for weeks?  Are they actually taking my laptop apart now?  Is the "mining for silicon" stage next?

Well, the thing about going with integrated graphics over the Nvidia chip is that you're stuck with integrated graphics.  Eventually the whole Nvidia issue will be sorted out, but you'll still be stuck with the unupgradable, underpowered Intel chipset.

Also, going to another retailer does not mean you'll get an unaffected GPU.  You can even order a Dell Studio laptop with an ATI chip.

My experience causes me to recommend going to a retailer rather than Dell.  Not only can you take it home that day, if you are a little flexible with your build, but the big benefit is that you don't (or at least I didn't) get the nVidia GPU, but rather an Intel Graphics Card.  Lastly, I much prefer talking to my local Geek Squad guy rather than spending 45 minutes on the phone with offshore Dell support.
