Need broadband Express Card

We just received our Inspiron 630M with plans to use it while traveling via our Verizon V620 Broadband PCMCIA card only to find out that the 630M only has an Express Card form factor. Are there any Express cards that will work with Verizon in order to utilize broadband?

Elan Digital Systems has two USB-to-PCMCIA adapters that work with broadband/AirCard/PC-cellular/PC-modem cards.

Which USB-to-PCMCIA adapter you need depends on whether you have a 16 or 32-bit PCMCIA modem card. To see the difference, go to:

    http://www.teampctechnology.com/product_detail.php?id=293

If your PCMCIA modem card is 16-bit, you can purchase the U111 for $130 at:

    http://www.teampctechnology.com/product_detail.php?id=511

    Delivery is 2-3 weeks (est).

If your PCMCIA modem is 32-bit, you can purchase the U132 for $192 at:

    http://www.teampctechnology.com/product_detail.php?id=508

Due to the huge shortage caused by Dell's removal of the PCMCIA slot from their Inspiron XPS laptops, the factory (Elan) has pushed out delivery to their distys. We will not be receiving the first batch until the last week of March. We are shipping out the U132 in the strict order in which pre-orders have been received on our website. Your credit card will not be charged until it ships. You may monitor the latest known shipping status at the same link/location.

Because of the above situation, a current order of the U132 will most likely ship to you in 3 months.

    Hi Jim Ray,

It is quick and easy to manually create the required dial-up connection, send a copy to the desktop as a shortcut, then use it, instead of the icon placed on your desktop by the Verizon software (Yes, you must install the Verizon software.  afterwards, you must completely ignore it).

The manual (d:\documentation\index.html) that opens automatically upon insertion of the CD that shipped with the U132 shows the process screen-shot by screen-shot.   It walks you through using the "New Connection Wizard" (Start > Programs > Accessories > Communications > New Connection Wizard).    Accept all defaults, except on the 2nd screen with choices of radio buttons, you must select the middle one of the three, "Manually create a dial-up modem connection"

When you get to the ISP name, it's up to you.  Something like "Verizon" is just fine.

The phone number to connect to Verizon's network is "#777".

The "User name:" is the 10-digit phone number assigned to the modem card plus "@vzw3g.com" such as 1234567890@vzw3g.com

    The 'Password:" is "vzw".

Before clicking on "Finish" on the last page, put a check in the box in the middle of the window to "send a copy to the desktop as a shortcut".

If you are using the PC5740, it may repeatedly connect and disconnect immediately.  The fix is as follows:

REMOVE the PC5740 from the U132, then, DISCONNECT the U132 prior to copying the file to your hard disk drive.

Download the replacement "elu132.sys" file from:

    http://www.elandigitalsystems.com/eng/drivers/u132/elu132.zip

Unzip it in a temporary directly.

Copy the elu132.sys file into the "c:\windows\system32\drivers" sub-folder.

    Reconnect the U132.

Reinsert the PC5740 into the U132.

If your PC has a wireless local area network (WLAN) device installed, disable it prior to clicking on the manually created Verizon Dial-up Connection icon.

If any connection problem still occurs, disable any firewall running on your PC (especially McAffee or Norton Internet Security).

IMPORTANT NOTE:  Be sure you have installed the U132 software AFTER installing the software from the Verizon.  If you didn't, simply reinsert the U132 software CD.  By the time IE opens the d:\documentation\index.html, it will have already reinstalled the drivers.  You can force the install by double-clicking on "install.bat" in the CD's root directory.

As of right now I can not find a wireless expess card through any server. I did speak with a dell rep. and he told me that Verizon should have one out by the end of the month. I also spoke with a lady at the Verizon store and she said she wasnt sure when they were coming out... and that they dont usually find out about new products untill right before they come out...If you find one before I do please let me know...

It clearly doesn't make good business sense to do what Dell has done with the express cards. If they are going to limit you to an express card, then it should be made especially clear to the consumer that the availability of PCMCIA express cards available is extremely limited.

Dell put me through 2 hours of phone time over this issue and then refused to allow me to return or exchange my system since it was purchased more than 21 days ago.  It was about 35 days ago.  I can't find an express broadband card either.  I'm still waiting on a reply to my e-mail to dell.  I am very disapointed.

I just got my U132 card and I will let you know how it works. I installed it but still no connection, but I am sure it is something I am doing.

I will never buy another DELL EVER! This has cost me lots of $$$ with down time and everything else. This is sad, because I buy nothing but DELL and tell all my friends to buy them. This Express Card will be their down fall because they just don't care about the custmoers that have made them Number 1.

Hey Jim understand UR frustration but the fact is that DELL has implemented a Technology which is going to be the next big thing in wireless but unfoutunately the other players in the industry have failed to accept this technology. All the wireless service providers don't want to implement a new technology because it would mean incurring of expenditure... Hence customers have to suffer.. But let me tell you one thing. Once the technology is accepted U'll really enjoy it & appreciate DELL for the foresight but for the Time being you can only feel disgusted..

Ya Dell should have provided an alternate for the time being

    Nick,

I agree with you 100% and time will tell. I love my 1505 and this is the only thing that got me. I should have payed more attention to the details but DELL has never done me wrong before until now. But, this is a lesson learned and I won't be as trusting and pay more attention.

    Thanks Nick

    Thanks for the help.

I just purchased a 1505 also and I am going through the same bull%^^%$  with dell. I even went out and spent $150 on T-mobiles aircard. then i took it a step further and signed up for the t-mobile internet service. luckily t-mobile was cool about my returning the aircard and taking the internet service off my plan. but now my laptop is a big waste of $$. I have only had it for a week and I called dell yesterday to return it and the customer care rep saidi could return it and buy a latitude model which has both the express slot and the old slot. well then i was tranferred to small business side because thats where the latitudes are sold. The lady there said i was out of luck with the latitude because I dont have a tax id #. she said that she would also charge me a 15% restock fee also if i returned my 1505. she told me that the wireless comps were getting the new cards out very soon, however when i called ALL of the wireless comps yesterday they have never heard of such a thing as an express card. Tmobile told me that i could buy a data kit for my current cell phone and use it as modem but Im sure it would be very slow connection. needless to say I am not very happy with Dell right now. Should I send this laptop back or not?
