Since they are built off shore in a factory, getting a refurb part would be highly improbable.  All parts would be new, or rechecked after failing online for who knows what reason (like worker incompetance).  If the one they sent looks like it has not been used before, your choice.

in all honestly, depending on your make and model of Dell Inspiron... most parts being replaced are refurbished.  Dell will never send you a new part, unless you pay for it.

 

also, I would preferably take a Dell certified replacement part over a hand fixed part simply because what you may have fixed could possibly break down.

well you are absolutely right then...

anywhich way you slice it, it is still under warrenty...

It wasnt really hand fixed, I just applied a fireware update (interestingly, dell techs didnt suggest this, and didnt even seem interested in my dvd drive model)
