Go to SolutionScreen goes Grey with lines
My Dell Inspiron 3520 screen goes grey with horizontal lines during use. It reminds me of an old TV except the lines do not scroll. It started after I upgraded from 8 to 8.1. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to fix this problem? Thank You

- Bnoth, The problem is not the monitor driver. Mine also says 6/21/2006. The problem is with the Display Adapter. That is the one that I rolled back the driver on. My system is an inspiron 7010. When you look at the Display Adapter you'll probably see similar driver dates as I mentioned in my post.
Hi RJasper,
Please run the “LCD Test”, follow the steps below.
Switch off the computer > Press and hold down the ‘D’ key on the keyboard and press the Power button > you will see different colors on the LCD screen. During the LCD test please check if the grey and horizontal line appears?
Also connect an external monitor and check if the issue persists.
RetiredHi,
I'm having the exact same issue - I have an Inspiron 3520 and last week I upgraded to Windows 8.1
Since the upgrade, the screen has intermittent bouts of fuzzy grey lines - there doesn't appear to be any trigger or pattern to when this occurs. I think (though not certain) that like your laptop, this doesn't seem to happen as often when the laptop is on charge.
Since you last posted, did you find the cause or a fix for the grey lines?I have access to a second monitor at work, so will take this laptop into work next week and attach it to a monitor as suggested and will post the outcome.

Grey screen, fuzzy lines and maybe worse on battery.
And you both upgraded the OS. Anything like this, (Skydrive link to picture)

It sounds like a possible driver compatibility problem or possibly some setting that needs tweaking.
Coincidently I had a similar issue on a Vostro, thread is here if anything might help. There are picture links in the thread but the forum rearranges the formatting so the post looks a mess,

I'm jumping on this bandwagon too. I also have an Inspiron 3520 and am having the same screen issue that the others described. I updated to Windows 8.1 when it first was introduced a few months ago and began noticing the fuzzy screen after that. It didn't do it with 8.0. For me, the screen usually turns a fuzzy white and black and split screens. I don't believe it is a monitor issue, because I can change the monitor output as if I were projecting to a second screen or duplicating the display to another device and it becomes fine again. I ran the LCD "test" that was proposed and noticed no problems.
It was ironic that the monitor kept bugging out while I was searching the Dell Community forums for a fix, so i was able to record a video of the screen. As everyone else stated, nothing provokes the screen from going fuzzy, and it usually returns to normal after a few seconds (sometimes longer than others).

I'm having the same problem with my Inspiron 3520. I've had the motherboard and DPK card replaced and now the display and display cable, but am still having the same issue. It was never a problem under Windows 8 but encountered the problem initially after upgrading to Win 8.1 and again after the motherboard was replaced, when I upgraded again to 8.1. I'm not looking forward to the time it will take, but will probably try to drop back to Windows 8. I hope Dell is reporting this problem to Microsoft.
