screen is blank with a twist
i bought a used screen to replace on my latitude d630. after hooking it up, i got nothing to display on it. here is the twist:
1. unhook the display on the laptop
2. hook the laptop up to an external monitor
3. startup
4. hook the display on the laptop back up
5. use the Fn keys to tell it to display to the onboard screen
after that i get a picture to display beautifully on the laptop screen. now without doing anything to the hardware, i shutdown and restart and get nothing on the display
any ideas on what i'm missing or doing wrong?

the screen fits perfectly into the laptop.
and if they aren't interchangeable, what explains it working when plugging it in after the laptop has started up already?

Whether the screen fits is only part of the issue. Because the screen has to be recognized by the BIOS in order to power up with the system, the BIOS includes information about screens shipped with the particular model of system. If you use a screen that wasn't shipped by Dell with your model system, you'll have compatibility issues that you're noting now.
If it's the exact same model screen you had, it should work - if it's not, be sure you know it came from another D630 - if it didn't, it won't work.

Sounds like it's a screen that wasn't shipped with the D630 - notebook screens aren't universally interchangeable.
