Some software won't install

I installed W2k on my brand new Inspiron 500m. Then Dell Notebook System Software couldn't be installed (neither the version I downloaded, i.e. A07, nor the one I found on the Dell CD, i.e. A06). Then some software was installed without problems (Office XP), but some was impossible to install (End Note and some dictionaries, that I had previously installed on other computers with W2k. Did anybody experience similar problems? Did he find a solution? Can he give me a piece of advice?

I think that Windows 2000 is not well supported by Inspiron (Dell doesn't support it actually). So that's maybe the source of your problem. Have you tried these softwares on your Inspiron with Windows XP?

How did you go about installing the software? Installing the software from the system software disk is basically the same with installing software in win xp. Here's is the link for the reinstall guide for win xp http://support.dell.com/us/en/kb/document.asp?DN=1085841 . You can use this as reference when installing the software in win2k since it's pretty much the same with XP. FYI: As yvanvw mentioned, Dell doesn't support OS downgrade. This is one of the issues when downgrading the OS.

Thank you, RP-L2, I just followed your advice and retried to install Dell Notebook System Software, following step by step the instructions, BUT IT STILL DID NOT WORK. I tried both, to tell that my operating system was W2k and that my operating system was WXP. Neither worked.
Will I really be obliged to install W XP?

    Loge,

If there is an option for windows 2000 in the installation, then theoretically, it should work. The problem might be a bad system software CD. Have you tried manually browsing the CD for the setup files? If ever you contact tech support, they might have you reinstall XP again because Dell doesnt support OS downgrades and to test the particular cd since there might be some compatibility issue with win 2k.
