sometimes memory, sometimes not

Running XP on an Inspiron 5100. I have two memory sticks, one 256 and one 512. I know they both work as I've tried them both in both slots. But one slot has become moody lately, sometimes registering the memory as being there, and on the next boot up telling me it's not. What are the possible reasons and what does it take to fix it? Thanking you in advance.

The socket is going bad; the solution is an expensive one -- you will need to replace the system board.

Thank you for your reply. Is it OK to run the computer with the one socket working and forget about the other one, or is this problem likely to affect other things as well? And should I take the memory stick out of the non-functioning socket or is it safe to just leave it in there?

You can take the memory stick out which will cause windows to run very slow. I can't see it hurting anything
