USB???
Hi,
I have an Inspiron 1150 running Windows XP Home SP2. The USB is not working correctly. I have dealt with computers for a while, and I have troubleshooted it in all ways I could think of and followed the Windows XP troubleshooting guide. The problem is that it does not even recognize when a USB device has been plugged in. I have attempted it with several devices and different cables, all with the same result. The device manager reports that the USB Hub and controller are both working properly.
The thing that caused me to notice the problem was a Nikon digital camera. It came with extra software, and the software said that the camera was not connected. I happened to insert the CD while trying to solve the problem and it started installing. Well, it started trying to install. It came up with an error: Camera is connected, please disconnect and restart installation. So now, the software was telling me the camera wasn't connected, but the installer was saying it was.
On another computer of mine that is running Windows 2k put a removable drive icon in "My Computer" but that icon was not there. In addition, when plugging in a USB device, there is no recognition of it at all. When plugging in a new device it doesn't pop the new device installation.
I hope this is clear. I'd appreciate any suggestions.
Thanks,
Dan

I have installed, and reinstalled the chipset driver. I'm not sure exactly which system software you are talking about. But, on another Inspiron 1150 that I support, I installed the same things as on this one and have no problems with the USB. As for Service Pack 4, I'm rather confused. SP 4 is a win 2k service pack. The computer with the problem is running win xp sp2. If you're not talking about a windows service pack, I have no clue what you are talking about.
Thanks again,

The Diagnostic reported no problems with anything at all. USB should be functioning properly. And still I've tried with more devices and more cables and still it doesn't even recognize that there is anything plugged in. I have reformatted and reinstalled XP once on this computer, but it's something I've done probably 20 times on over 10 systems and I don't know that I would have messed it up. I've also installed all the drivers on the Dell CD. Would it be worth trying to reformat and see if things are fixed? Oh, I'll repost the description here... Inspiron 1150 w/ DVDRW and P4 2.8 Ghz. Running Win XP Home SP2. I do have the service tag if that would help.
Once again,
thanks

I would like to know where I need to go from here! The diagnostic shows no problems with the USB controller, host, or computer in general. Both the cords and devices work on other Dell laptops, and I don't really know how all the Dell warranty works. I have RRD for another 300 days. Would that cover the repair of the computer? If so, how should I go about doing it?Please, any help would be greatly appreciated.- My wife actually owns a 1150.
When reinstalling system apart from the Intel chipset driver you also need to install of the Dell Notebook System Software. If you have already installed both then I can only suggest that you delete everything from under USB in device manager then reboot the computer.
At restart, Windows will redetect your USB hardware and reinstall it/them. LightningClap00

What do you mean by "system software"? I installed all of the software on the Dell Driver CD. As for deleting USB and having at reinstall... Well, I reformatted the computer, reinstalled all of the drivers, and then updated Windows and any drivers available on Windows Update. And USB devices still are not recognized as being plugged in. I appreciate the help everyone, but either 1. System Software is something I already installed, or have never heard of. or 2. It's a major problem because I have tried all of the troubleshooting I know how to do(which personally I'd consider quite extensive). If the second is true, I really don't know where to go from here. There hasn't yet been a problem with any computer I own or support(10) that I haven't been able to troubleshoot.
Please, somebody save me! :)LightningClap00
