Thanks for your response. I am already using both Win2K and XP on this machine. In fact, XP is my primary OS.

My problem is that I have users still on 98 that I need to support. I'm trying to create a test environment that emulates theirs as much as I can. Generally, I can do this in the lab. Sometimes, though, I need to do it from the road. So, I still need to pursue using 98 on the 600.

Just to make sure I understand your message correctly, am I correct that the default VGA display is the best I can achieve?

I have been trying to load Win98 Second Edition for a couple of weeks without much success.  I can't even get it to complete the installation script.  Did you have to do anything special to load it?  I am now looking at the Setup switches.  I have tried a couple of them, but to no avail.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Are you using the W98 Boot Disk simultaneously with the W98SE CD? W98SE  is not a selfbooting CD like W2k or W-XP( the only exception is a W98SE Dell Recovery CD) and you must use either a Boot Diskette or Boot CD to boot the CDROM and install the CDROM drivers. Am I correct that you do not get a Floppy Drive with your D-Model? I have a Boot CD if that is the case and can mail you a copy if you need it.

I purchased a seperate floppy drive.  I used a Windows 98 Recovery disk from another Dell Laptop that get the CD-Rom to run.  I have copied the complete WIN98_SE directory to my hard drive and I am trying to install from there.  The install runs all the way through until is displays a form "Windows 98 Setup" with 6 items on it.

Control Panel

Programs on the Start Menu

Windows Help

MS-DOS program settings

Tuning up Application Start

System Configuration

Setup then runs through the Control Panel.  Then it runs the Programs on the Start Menu step.  It gives you feed back about the icons being loaded then it hangs.  The mouse no longer responds.  On subsequent reboots it does exactly the same thing.  It does boot into safe mode.  I have tried adding video drivers, disabling all the network drivers, all the unknown devices, comm ports.  I have updated the chip set drivers and the bios.  I have recopied the setup source from several different sources.

I am about to give up accept I can see from the forums that other people are having better luck. 

I am doing this as "native" install.  I am not using partition magic and boot magic or other such tools.  I intend to load XP home after and have a dull boot machine.  I wouldn't think that these tools would change any thing. But stranger things have happened.

You using a bootable CDRom however makes me think that perhaps it has something to do with the USB bus.  The floppy drive runs though a USB connection.  Looking at the Hardware configuration it does not seem to know about USB. 

Any help you can offer would be wonderful.
