The monitor is about 8 months old and it is set to 1280x1024 @ 60 Hz.
Since about 3 weeks ago it started to make a loud "clicking" noise. It is similar to when plastic expands and creaks, but it is definitely not the plastic part. It is much sharper and louder. Sometimes it happens only once during an 18 hour continuous use, and sometimes it occurs 3-4 times in an hour.
Could anyone comment on what may be the cause of this?
Thanks in advance!
Sounds like it could be static, or possible the heat generated by the LCD is causing the plastic parts of the monitor to expand. This is normal with some electronics, though I don't know about LCD monitors. We have about 4 running here at work and they've never made any noises, but it's pretty loud in here. If it keeps doing it for a long time or the video starts to suffer then call Dell.

No. There is no flicker on the display when the clicking sound occurs.
Aside from this problem, 1703fp is a great flat panel LCD monitor. I am just afraid that this peculiar problem will develop something into more serious in the future.
Thanks.
If you purchased the monitor as a new monitor, it has a 3 year warranty on it. If you still have considerable time left on your warranty, you might consider doing nothing at this time.
Himmm... I just checked my order history, and apparently I purchased this system last year mid-June. So, the 1 year warranty on the system is over.
Now the question is whether the monitor is still covered for another 2 years or not. I have asked this question on this board and got conflicting information (both from the members of the forum, as well as from the moderators). Some said the warranty on the monitor ends with the system, and some said regardless it was 3 years. Is there a "final" word on this? If so, is it written somewhere on a web page etc?
Thanks!
Here is some useful info on your monitor warranty:
How long does this limited warranty last?
This limited warranty lasts for the time period indicated on your packing slip or invoice, except for the following Dell-branded hardware:
Portable computer batteries carry the lesser of either a 1-year limited warranty or the length of the limited warranty for the Dell computer with which the battery is shipped.
Projector lamps carry a 90-day limited warranty.
Memory carries a lifetime limited warranty.
Monitors carry the longer of either a 3-year limited warranty or the remainder of the warranty for the Dell computer to which the monitor will be connected.
PDAs, MP3 players, earphones, remote inline controls, and AC adapters carry a 1-year limited warranty.
Other add-on hardware carries the longer of either a 1-year limited warranty for new parts and a 90-day limited warranty for reconditioned parts or, for both new and reconditioned parts, the remainder of the warranty for the Dell computer on which such parts are installed.
Thanks very much for the information. I printed out that page, highlighted the section about the monitors and stored that page in my safe :)
My system warranty was 1 year, but looks like the monitor will be covered for another 2 years. In case it gets worse, I will contact Dell for service...
How does the repair process work on monitors? Do they send a refurbished one and ask you to return the problematic one back? I hope they dont want me to send it and be without a monitor until it is fixed....
I'm also experiencing clicking on my 19" (had it about 3 months). I was told it is probably the heated parts expanding/contracting. It comes from the right-hand side of the monitor at the back (I presume from inside). Like you, I don't hear anything for hours, then I may hear it 5 or 6 times within a short period. I also don't experience any other symptoms, so if or when something happens, I'll do my worrying then.
