I have dual 2407s both connected with dvi to a matrox 650 card. I connected the USB cables from each monitor to a 5 port hp usb 2.0 pci card.
The video works great at 1900x1200 each for a total of 3800x1200, lots of desk top.
Viewing the USB devices using a freeware USB viewer I see that each monitor contains a couple hubs.
The first hub has 2 ports, one of which is connected to a USB plug and the other port is connected to a second hub. The second hub is connected to the remaining 3 USB plugs and the flash card reader device. I cant find any documentation on this.
Second, as long as I plug in just one of the monitors USB cables (to the pci card) the flash reader in the connected monitor works OK. However, if I plug in both monitors one of the flash readers shows up as not working, claiming I need to reboot to make it work. But after a reboot it still says the same thing. After reinstalled the drivers for both it still has the same error.
It appears there is a conflict between the flash readers in the 2 monitors. I dont know much about USB but its almost like they both have the same ID and conflict with each other.
I can use one set of (2) card readers and the 4 usb's on one monitor at a time, if I try both monitors for 4 readers and 8 usb's I get a Windows conflict message. Other configurations may yield other results. I think there is something in the manual that states when using two 2407's, use only one set of reader's and usb's or you'll have a conflict.
The card readers show up as drives with letters in My Computer.
I must be going blind, I looked through the english files on the CD (which seems to be from around april 2006, the monitor is an A02) but I dont see anything about only using 1 monitors usb hub/reader being a problem. I even did a grep of the html files looking for something I might have missed.
BTW, Im running w2k sp4 and I dont see any conflict messages just the warning about needing to restart the computer.
After running tests with one of the monitors USB cables unplugged I reattached it and rebooted. On the device display the card reader for the newly attached reader showed up as "Other device" until I reinstalled the driver.
Also, the other card reader that had been working was now acting flakey. When I clicked on the "remove" selection for the 2 drive letters that are associated with the reader, one of them would get a small red x near it in the windows explorer display.
So it seems the 2 readers step on each other all the time not just at start up.
I tried disabling and uninstalling the added reader but things still did not work correctly.
I opened a case with tech support, they said they would send me a confirmation email and then get back to me but neither has occured yet.
All I can do is tell you what I see from my XP end and it may give you a hint where to go. You sound tech savvy and some of the info may be redundant to what you already know.
I tried using both USB connections simultaneously from (2) 2407's to same PC. And tried in different USB inputs USB1 and USB2 as connected to mobo.
When doing so, in The Device Manager next to the Yellow exclamation marks, the error message states:
”Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware because there is a duplicate device already running in the system. (Code 42)”
Recommended resolution by Microsoft for code 42url to codes page: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310123
Code 42 explanation:
”A duplicate device was detected. This error occurs when a bus driver incorrectly creates two identically named children (bus driver error), or when a device with a serial number is discovered in a new location before it is removed from the old location.
Restart the computer.
On the General Properties tab of the device, click Troubleshoot to start the Troubleshooting Wizard.”
Other information shows:
For my drive letters for the two card readers from one 2407 panel,
Double clicking on the card reader drive letters states the message,
“Please insert a disc into drive “letter”: This let’s me know they are working.
From properties by right clicking on the drive letter it self, and looking at the hardware tab you should find these devices from on
Generic Flash HF-CF USB Device
Generic Flash HF-Combo Device
Info from device manager:
The drivers Win XP is utilizing are Microsoft, Date 7-1-2001, Version 5.1.2600.0
States working properly. Both drive letters.
I would try to upgrade to Win XP SP2 Pro, that OS resolves a lot of issues and is needed more often now for new applications as a requirement. It sort of forces you to upgrade or apps. will be blocked from installation as well as newer hardware peripherals in the future.
Dell states:General
Connection type USB 2.0 High Speed Device (USB Full Speed Device compatible)
Supported OS Windows 2000 and XP
· The Flash Memory Card Reader is automatically recognized by Windows 2000 and XP.
You wrote, “one of them would get a small red x near it in the windows explorer display.”
There is definitely something wrong there. Red X’s bad. Win 2000 and XP is supposed to recognize the card readers like Dell states. I assume you have the latest SP’s.
When is the last time you did a fresh install of 2000 and you really should upgrade to XP SP2. An old install over a year ago can yield corrupt files and no mater what you do it won’t work correctly. I tried 2000 for a month or two way back when and had nothing put perpetual trouble, all kinds of driver issues, went to XP as fast as I could that resolved a lot of issues. Of course it could be the 2407 but I’d try the software side first.
Do both 2407’s give the RED X of death symbol, if they both do I’d blame the OS.
Hope that helps in your diagnosis procedures.
Good day!:)

I am an "old school" computer person, I dont believe "reboot" and "OS reinstalls" are solutions, just work arounds until the real problem is found and fixed, Which is why in the 3-4 yrs that Ive had my hp x4000 work station Ive only reinstalled the OS once and that was when I replaced the HD with a pair of 36GB 15K SCSI drives. (not including the upgrade to SP3 then to SP4)
Your info from the XP messages and the link was helpful it provided more useful info than the error I am getting from w2k. Im in the process of trying to learn the low level specs of USB so I can understand what the root cause of the problem is. Are you aware of any hardware/tech support manuals available for this monitor?
I am current shopping ebay for an updated workstation (maybe an hp xw8200 or IBM intellistation pro z 6223?) and looking to build a new email computer as well and those will likely be using XP sp2.
Have you ever tried daisy chaining the monitors?, ie, plugged one into the computer and the second monitor into the first?
Do you have any experience with USB tools such as USBviewer?
BTW, the small red x that appears near one of the 2 drive letters associated with the flash card ready only occurs when both monitors (USB) are plugged in and after I try to shut it down so I can remove the card. After a reboot its not there.
Also, if this was working properly I would expect to see 4 drive letters assigned, 2 for each monitor however, I only see 2.
I still have not gotten any response at all from dell tech support. How has your experience been with them?
