This concerns a P4 Intel based desktop 3.4, 2x1024 PC3200, 120gb Seagate SATA hdd, XP Home SP3, XFX GF 6800XT, NEC 1770GX (top quality).
This issue started about 6 months ago, if not longer. It does not happen all the time. But now seems to have gotten worse by happening more often. It happens while booting, hot or cold and the only way to correct it is to turn off the power to the pc and reboot.
What happens is while booting, and from the very first thing that is displayed, and before it gets to the desktop, what ever is normally on the screen shot at that time is superimposed with black and white checkered boxes, see below of an actual photo of the screen shot at issue.
At first I thought it was either the Monitor's refresh rate being too high, or either the HDD or the Video card saying hello.
a) I set the refresh rate to as low as it goes, 60Hz...Stll the same.
b) Reloaded the OS because of an unrelated issue...........Still the same
c) Ran Seagate's Sea Tools HDD checker and it came back clean, with no proroblems found.
d) So that leaves the Video card being left of the things I thought may be causing this issue.
In looking at this picture below, and what I described above, what do you think is causing this display issue while booting?
Thanks

Cleaned out the inside with compressed air out in the garage. PC is clean as a whistle, what ever that is? Reseated the vidieo card. I have to admit that it seems to have slacked off some, the issue that is.
Something that may be related to this: I did notice that bright colors like red are blotchy in areas. Never did like the XFX card to begin with, not that it may be the problem? I bought it new only a couple of years ago. I should have kept ATI 9800 pro card that was in this box (I needed dual dvi out)
This PC build is 4.5 years old and I really am not looking forward to putting any big money into it, even though it still is a well performing pc. I'm may look around for another agp 8x card, I don't know?
If reseating it helped, use so 90% isopropal to clean the contacts after you use a pencil eraser on them. Reseat 3 times and hope for the best. If money is an issue for an old machine, there are lots of cheap cards out there that are working
