My Dell L500r Dimension desktop monitor shuts itself off
everytime I turn on the computer. The screen goes black, so I can't do anything.
"Sanjeev" from Dell's Chat service had the bright idea of running the monitor's diagnostics. Good suggestion, except how do I do that with a blank screen?!?!?
I borrowed another Dell monitor from work, plugged it in at home, and the same thing happened: It shut itself off.
Suggestions?
FYI: I'm e-mailing this posting from my new Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop, which thankfully arrived last Thursday two hours after the deskop monitor went blank. The reason why I want to fix the monitor problem, if possible, is so I can donate the entire computer to a worthy charity, but first I want to delete all my e-mail, save the e-mail address book and some documents.
If 2 monitors are doing the same thing on the same computer then, the problem is not the monitor but, the video card. Try reseating or replacing the video card in the system.
Mr. Jesse, thanks for the suggestion, which I followed. But, no change. The Dell monitor goes black right after the Windows 98 logo appears, which is right after the computer runs ScanDisk.
I have the receipt for the video card, and even its original box, which was installed at a local CompUSA store in April. At that time, everything worked fine. I have e-mailed the manufacturer, Mad Dog Multimedia, about the problem, but no reply, yet.
A few days ago, I mailed the video card to the manufacturer/vendor, Mad Dog Multimedia, per its request. So, I'm waiting for either a new card or the old one with a letter saying it's not faulty. Stay tuned, and thanks for your help.
A new Mad Dog video card arrived today, and I installed it right away. Alas, the monitor still shuts off right after the Windows 98 screen appears. I plugged in another monitor, which I had done before, but the same thing happened. With the screen black, I can't run a diagnostic, so what's my next step?
I still need help figuring out why the monitor shuts off or goes into sleep mode or whatever shortly after I turn on the computer. See details in earlier threads. Much thanks.
I took my nearly 6-year-old Dell L500r Dimension desktop to PC Express last week to finally get the problem fixed. The problem: The monitor would shut down seconds after turning on the power. PC Express found four drivers for video cards and removed all but the one for the newest card. Problem solved.

Faison,
Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.
