resolution question for 2100FP

I just got my new monitor today. I have two questions.

(1) I am using analog and resolution of 1024 by 768.  Even though everyone on the forum seems to think I would be happier at the native resolution - I am used to 1024 by 768 so will probably stay with that for awhile. So far I am real pleased with what I see. I do not do gaming. Anyway, wanted to know what the recommended refresh rate is for viewing at 1024 by 768?
I read that 60 is the recommended when at the native resolution but did not know for the resolution I am using.  And does it REALLY matter?  My Windows Me has a choice in the pull-down menu for 'optimal' in addition to other choices. What do you recommend?

(2) The second one has to do with NOT using a power saving mode. I never have before. I have seen on the forum that others have problems with this. Is it safe for the monitor (or will it get too hot) if I always keep it on?   Most of the time (Like when I go to bed at night) or away from the computer for an extended period, I will just use the Power Off/On switch to turn the monitor off.   What is recommended and do you think this option is okay? Or should I be using  a Power saving mode?
(My previous CRT Dell Trinitron P1100 burned up the Power Supply - possibly because I never turned it off and used no power saver mode)

Thanks

My Input for 1) In my opinion you bought the wrong monitor if you continue to use 1024 x 768. Would you buy a Corvette and disable 4 cylinders? I would hope not! 60 Hz is fine for the 2001fp. Refresh rate really isn't accurate with an LCD. It's more like a pixel coordination rate. Anyway . . ... don't think that setting is anything like it is for a CRT.

My input for 2) The auto power down (sleep) problem for the monitor depends on the manufacturer. I have an ATI RADEON 9700 Pro and have used the sleep mode since day one (11 months ago). It has NEVER failed to function properly. However, I induce sleep from the BIOS and not the Operating System. I have the Windows XP power scheme showing none! Using this method does not effect the power brick. It's warm when the computer is on, or sleeping.

By the way as indicated above I'm coming up on one year with my 2001FP. Not one dead/stuck pixel. It has been rock solid reliable.

I bought this monitor basicaly because I was used to a 21 inch CRt monitor before and wanted something close in size. I just got it yesterday. I may not always use the native resolution but for now this is good. I don't do gaming at all. Mainly surf web pages, some graphics, and word processing.  When I use the native resolution, everything is so small. Yes, I know I can increase the font size, but it still shoves most web pages all the way to the left. Most web pages have not been designed for this high of a resolution yet and many web page backgroun
ds repeat themselves at this resolution. to me that looks odd.

But I'm not sure i understood the total answer for #2. I have a Nvidia graphics card currently with no DVI output options. My quesiton again, is it okay NOT to use a Power Saving Mode, but just turn the computer off? (I know nothing about changes to the BIOS so would be reluctant to do that). Also, I have a Windows ME.

Correction - I am not uding the native resolution. I am using 1024 by 768. I had stated, "I may not always use the native resolution". That is wrong. I meant, "I may not always use a resolution of 1024 by 768 and may later switch to native resolution.'  Sorry...

    gators,

I just received my 2001fp and I too am used to running at 1024 x 768 so I understand where you're coming from, there can be a little adjustment.

    I'm running mine at 1600 x 1200 ..
here are a few tips for you to try and see if you like it...

1st, as you said, turn on Large Fonts
2nd, Turn on Large Icons also (in the display Control panel, choose the Appearance tab, then click the Effects button, there is a checkbox for it)

3rd, and this to me was the key item, set the DPI setting to Large Size (120 dpi)! This really made the biggest difference, and made the transition to the larger resolution the easiest! (you'll find it in the display Control Panel, Settings tab, Advance button, on the General tab)

Also, make sure you have ClearType turned on.. all LCD's need that! :)

Anyways, with those settings in place, the normal items that you're used to seeing appear at a "normal" size, while you still get the benefits of running the monitor at it's native resolution and you get the extra desktop space and sharpness of the higher resolution.
