Cloning and compression

Just trying to figure this one out; if we are cloning data from one library (a VTL) to another (a physical tape library), the data being client-side compressed, is the data cloned compressed or not compressed!??

I believe the answer is it will be compressed as it was compressed on the client but the compression applied by the drive will be uncompressed (and reapplied if the target drive has compression enabled)...

Does that sound right?

Good question... I believe it is uncompressed as it arrives to tape already compressed which happens on client level. So I would expect data to be uncompressed only at client level during restore. When doing cloning I expect no action to uncompress should take place.

I have another bit to add here; if the data is client-side compressed then the EDL should be able to handle an increased throughput of data both for backup and cloning... Is that correct?

    In theory yes.
