Exchange 2007 Backup with Networker
Management has come down and established the following criteria for backup of mail messages on our not yet implemented Exchange 2007 SP1 installation.
1) no individual message in any stored mailbox backup can be older than 30 days
2) users can store up to 300MB of messages in their mailboxes
3) users can keep and retrieve messages for any duration of time as long as the mailbox does not exceed the 300MB.
Question: Is it even possible to backup only the last 30 days worth of messages in each mailbox and still allow each user to have 31 - 365 days, or more, worth of messages in their mailbox?
I have not setup the backup environment for this yet and have just ordered the NetWorker Server and Exchange Modules. We currently use Retrospect as our Backup Software, that program only allows us to backup and restore mailboxes as complete files, I can not backup or restore individual messages within each users mailbox. Our current Mail Program is something called CommuniGate it is Linux based and each mailbox is a directory that holds the Inbox as a seperate MBX file
My thoughts on this are that we need to set the Exchange Server up to delete any mail that is older than 30 days, and use a Mail Archiving system to allow for the user stores to be 300MB and allow them to store messages that are older than the 30 days
Managements thoughts are that I should be able to configure Networker to only backup the messages in each mailbox that are newer than 30 days. I need to know if this is even remotely possible using only the Networker Exchange Module? Thanks

To me that sounds something more related to Exchange policy than backup.
3) users can keep and retrieve messages for any duration of time as long as the mailbox does not exceed the 300MB.
AFAIK, users can't restore messages.

That's correct but it is possible to restore at message level

You can restrict the mailbox size in various ways - check the Exchange documentation as it is a long time since I've had anything to do with this...
You may find that you also need to look at a mail archiving solution (for example EmailXtender) to actually achieve what you wish to achieve.
