I'm trying to sort out which licenses are required for my environment and I have a few questions at regards :
1) LIC-002902 : NetWorker Server Network Edition for Windows. This license is for my networker server and includes 10 clients . Does it mean I can backup 10 clients + my backup server or 9clients + my backup server?
2) LIC-002284 : NetWorker Network Ed Dedicated Storage Node for Linux. Is this license all I need to backup the storage node or do I need to buy an extra CLIENT license for it?
3) where can I find a list of licenses and what they cover?
I'm not 100% sure on this (as licenses do not tend to be technical and what they are is far more unstable than anything I have seen so far :)), but... a) I think this is server + 10 clients b) Dedicated SN is enough - you don't need additional client license for that c) Usually this is handled by various licensing and sales departments and it does change with course of time... but I don't remember seeing any official guide out there
your referring to client using the DSN license which will change allow it to perform as a Storage Node, and that it will utilise ONE of the available Client licenses from the available client licenses incorporated in the Server License....
In that is not what your meaning, then please be aware, that every single client, albeit a LAN based backups or to a Sotrage node device will require a Client License...
The only systems I am aware or that wont require a Client License, will be those that are clustered, and already have a Cluster Client license in place.
I must be honest you lost me on the first part. :P
Basically, I have got 4 storage node (servers that can see the tape library via FC so a direct backup can be performed) and 14 normal clients to backup. 10 clients are included in my Networker server and that leaves me with 4 normal client + 4 storage node to be licensed.
So, my question is really whether I should plan to buy 4 Storage Node (LIC-002284) licenses and 8 clients (1*LIC-002021 + 3*LIC-001637) or 4 Storage Node and 4 Clients.
If I've understood correctly what you are saying, I will need 4 Storage Node licenses and 8 clients because each Storage Node needs a client license too. Please correct me if I've misunderstood..
I just checked nsrlic -v output from one system (7.1.x based) and according to licence allocation output given it seems like client connection gets allocated to server, storage node and dedicate storage node. This means that server, storage node and dedicated storage node do not have client connection incorporated for machines they will be allocated to - they simply enable the feature they represent.
This means my first response here was incorrect. So, in 7.1.x world that would mean you need 4 Storage Node licenses and 8 clients on top of the 10 incorporated into base enabler. I guess same applied for 7.2.x and 7.3.x worlds.
yes, think of the client licenses and "device" licenses as being separate...
if your nsr server license have 10 incorporate client licenses..
20 clients, 5 of which use their own attached tape devices..... licenses = 10 extra client connection licenses required AND 5 Storage node licenses (or dedicated if not being used by other 'clients')
You need 4 SN's and 4 extra client connection licenses...
If you havd 14 clients (with storage nodes included). However, my impression was he has 18 clients as he said "Basically, I have got 4 storage node (servers that can see the tape library via FC so a direct backup can be performed) and 14 normal clients to backup." To me that sounded as storage nodes are separate machines to those clients (in such case he would require extra 8 license - perhaps 9 as we don't know if backup server was counted).
Perhaps the easiest way to understand this is: * package=>modules - client=>client - storage node=>storage node, client - backup server=>backup server, storage node, client
Each client will allocate one client connection. (this is not valid for cluster systems!)
Just to correct things though I have now noticed further down Hrvoje spots his mistake!
You get 10 client licenses with Network edition and the Networker server will use one of those to back itself up, so effectively you can back up the Networker server and 9 clients.
Each storage node also has to have a client installed so will use one client license as well as the storage node (check it when you do the install).
If the storage nodes only back themselves up they are dedicated storage nodes (DSN); if any other client backs up via that storage node then they are storage nodes. The other difference - DSN licenses are about a tenth of the cost of SNs!
There is a licensing guide available on PartnerNet (I think about 100 pages) which explains how everything should be, though I have known in the past the licensing department tell me the licenses work one way, but if they don't then they think they may work another way If you don't have access I think EMC should be able to send you a copy as I had it okayed to distribute it to those interested when I was teaching the Networker course.
