VSS

Hello. The VSS options doesn't appear inside NetWorker user interface on Windows Server 2003.
- Networker has the volume shadow copy license - open file option
- Volume shadow copy and microsoft provider are enabled
- save -s server -o "VSS:C:\=only" "C:\" works and creates shadows

So, why the GUI doesn't show the ASR, VSS SYSTEM STATE and the others?
NetWorker Ver. 7.3.2

Check on client what do you get when you check save operations under Options. Perhaps it is disabled there. If not and if license is correct contact support.

However, it would also good idea to try server side backup to see if VSS is used or not.

    Hi,

I saw in the 7.3 release notes dated 2/8/2005 that VSS does not work on x64 windows 2003.

Also on the RNs dated 12/4/2006

Do you know if that has been fixed?

    Thanks,

AFAIK for x64 platforms MS needs to provide fix first and then VSS on them will be supported. You may wish to check with EMC about MS case.

I have done some testing on both 32 and 64 bit editions of windows 2003 in combination with networker 7.3.2. The vss function works perfect on both editions however on 32 bits the vss service consumes a considerable amount of non-paged memory.
Have you tried not entering anything in the "save operations" field on the miscellaneous tab in the client resource?

VSS has been working fine on our x32s. However, the new release of MS Exchange 2007 will only run on x64. During my info gathering and planning efforts I came across the "VSS is not supported" in the release notes.

This is our first x64 box so I wanted to see what we would be up against. With MS forcing Exchange admins to move to x64, I hope there will be a strong effort to get the issue solved with Legato's VSS.

    Thanks for the help.

The problem is not with x64, x32 bits version in this case. Testing in my lab, I discovered that this problem starts because Windows User has some restrictions. If I connect with local admin, the options to backup vss appear, otherwise doesn't. The user is now verifying the user permission ( the user that he was using is a Domain Admin but this user can not see the VSS on the GUI, only the local admin. I believe that he has some restrictions in this user.)

    But thank you all.
