I have 1 x 6024 doing VLAN routing between all our other switches. We then have another 13 34xx PowerConnect switches trunked to this 6024. All of these trunks are 1000mbit.
The other day we had our first packet storm on the network, having read these forums and the documentation a bit more i realise a few things we can do to stop this. The main one being Storm Control, sounds obvious but I have little experience with using it on a network of this size and would like some advice.
I plan on turning storm control on every port on every 34xx switch AND the 6024. Because i have little experience with this I was going to use the default broadcast rate threshold.
My worries questions....
1. is this a good idea, or could i start seeing real traffic going missing ?
2. is the default threshold ok ?
3. should i get the 34xx switches to look at broadcast, multicast and unknown unicast traffic, is this potentially bad ?
4. by applying the storm control to the physical ports in a LAG, does this apply the setting to the LAG itself ?
Looks like the forums have gone a bit 'slow' over the last week :(
I went ahead and put Storm control on all of the fast ethernet ports of the 34xx powerconnects, i left it off of the ports in the LAG as i was unsure if this was safe etc. So far no reported problems of network access etc. We are monitoring over the next week before we leave the changes in place.
I have not yet activated this on our main 6024 as i am still unsure. Any advice would be very welcomed !
I use broadcast storm control on all the powerconnect switches i ever use. I wouldnt be to worried about dropping legitimate traffic as this function will only rate limit broadcast packets, not packets that have an actual destination. With a similar situation to what you have with storm control turned on i have had broadcast storms on certain subnets without even knowing about it. The 6024 was still handling all the other traffic just fine. Hope everything works out for you.
