Can this be done?!?

I have a Netgear WGR614 Wireless Router. I don't use the wireless functionality of the router at this time, but use it to hardwire two machines onto my home network. I have two machines Dell Dimension w/ Windows XP Home Edition (Computer A) and a HP w/ Windows XP Home Edition (Computer B). Since Computer B is newer than Computer A I would like to store all my digital pictures and video on Computer B. Both Computer A and Computer B are connected to the router via ethernet cable. The router is connected to a cable modem to allow internet access on both machines. However, I would like to be able to share files back and forth between the two computers, but disable the internet on Computer B while still having the ability to use the internet on Computer A while not cutting off the computers from sharing files.

I hope this makes sense...Is this possible?

    Internet2000,

The answer may depend on the version of the WGR614 you have.  Based on the online version of the WGR614 Version 6 reference manual, yes, you can block internet access for a specific IP address on your network.  It's documented in Chapter 4 of the V6 reference manual under "Blocking Access to Internet Services."  If your WGR614 is not version 6, consult the reference manual for the version you have.  It's probably on the install CD as a .pdf file.

I have version 5...Is there anyway within Windows to block internet access without blocking access to shared files stored on the other computer?

    INTERNET2000,

You may still be able to configure your V5 router, which is why I suggested you look at the reference manual that came with it.  Most likely the capabilities in the V6 are also available in the V5.

You have not defined what "internet access" means to you.  Just Internet Explorer?  What about email, FTP, etc?  I am not aware of anything in Windows XP to do this.  I suppose you could install a software firewall such as ZoneAlarm and configure it to block all internet access.

If it was me, I'd do it in the router.

Edit: I found the V5 reference manual online.  Content filtering is available in the V5 and it is discussed in Chapter 5 of the manual.  The manual can be downloaded here.

Give the one machine you wish to deny internt access to a statis IP Address within the subnet range of the router. Go tino the router configuration properties and block Port 80 traffic to that address.

    INTERNET2000,

You can restrict access to the internet by configuring your Netgear router to restrict access to a particular ip address. You can actually block all traffic from all ports using the access control of that router. Please refer to your router's manual.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I logged onto the routers configuration control panel and just blocked it for the ip of computer b.

Once again, I appreciate your time and input. Sorry it took me so long to revisit the forum.
