* Could somebody answer a SIMPLE Question? Please *
Hello, before I ask my question I am using a Dell Optiplex GX260, running on Windows XP PRO SP2. A good friend of mine decided to give me one of his semi old business computers in return for some money that he owed me. I agreed and took it in, I removed the windows NT it was running on and installed windows xp pro. The computer runs great, the problem now is that when I go into My computer hardware device manager, seems like alot of things are not installed. Alot of missing drivers, heres a pic
http://server5.pictiger.com/img/156154/computers-and-electronic-gadgets/example.jpg . Anyways in the picture you see the Ethernet tab with a question mark, so of course I know that the drivers for my ethernet card are not installed. Now I came to the dell website, found the suppose drivers for my system, which are suppose to be the right ones, it let me choose my dell version and everything so i know i was in the right section. First the drivers did not download, it was the file R49958.EXE , i guess dell doesent have those files hosted any more or what. Luckily I googled that same file and some good guys on another site had it hosted, and was the same exact file. I downloaded , installed it did everything. But when I try to update my driver, then I locate the drivers i installed and everything it still wont update them, keeps telling me it didnt find anything. I tried extracting the drivers to a floppy disk, did not work because it would not try to find drivers on my floppy disk for some reason. I tried putting in the exact address of the drivers like C:\drivers\etc. and still no luck. So I was wondering if anybody could tell me if i could order or download some sort of disk that had those drivers and more for my Optiplex GX260, or of a webiste that I could purchase it or download them. Or if any of you have any suggestions I would love to hear them, thank you.
The exe file from the dell support site is the driver that you needed for your device. All you need to do is save it first on your desktop. Then after you save it, go to the desktop screen and double click the file. It will extract the file automatically and install the drivers for you.
Sounds like you might need to install the Chipset drivers for the Intel 845G Chipset (I found the specs for the GX260, "here"). "The Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility is the first driver to install. If it is required for your system, it should be installed immediately after installing your operating system and any operating system service packs.
The Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility files inform the operating system how to properly configure the chipset for specific functionality, such as AGP, USB, Core PCI, and ISAPNP services. In order to be able to install any chipset-related drivers (e.g. graphics, IDE, etc.), your operating system must first be able to recognize your chipset."
The "Dell Chipset Drivers" for the GX260 are "here". The latest "Intel 845G Chipset Drivers" are "here" (newer than Dell's).
According to the specs page... the GX260 has an "Integrated PCI Network Interface with ASF". I believe the "Intel 8254x 1000 Integrated Network Driver" (R54402.EXE - "click here"<ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed / replaced from this post by Dell>) is the one you might want to use. And if you need the "Intel ASF (Alert Standards Format) Console", "click here".
I found the Dell drivers at the "Optiplex GX260/ WinXP" download site ("click here").
You might want to unplug the “Lexmark x1100 All-In-One printer” (especially if it’s USB connected) until you have the other Device drivers installed.
The “Dell OptiPlex GX260 Systems User's Guide” is "here". The “Dell OptiPlex GX260 Service Manual” is "here".
