Just got a Dimension E310 for my wife with the 1450 USB wireless adapter. When I plugged the adapter in (the software had been preloaded), I got a strong signal and initially good connection to all the internet sites. However, after a few minutes, I got a message indicating "reduced or lost connection" although the network signal remains strong. After I hit "repair" the connection restores itself, but then gets lost again, i.e. the IP address and the gateway show zeros.
I know that this is some silly setting I need to cahnge(my other on the home network works fine). Anyone know what to look for? I am using a D-Link DI-614+ as a router.
I was on the phone with the D-Link techies for over an hour. They changed the adapter to have a static IP address -- now I get an excellent signal which does not get lost. :-)
However, no I cannot connect to the Internet, i.e., when I open to my home page, I get the famous "Page not Found" message and the same for all other URLs I type in. This is frustrating -- before, at least a connected to the web briefly until I lost connection -- now I have signal connection but not web access. Help!
Do you use WEP?
Make sure to CLEAR the checkbox 'allow to turn off power' at Configure network adapter. Generally it is checked by default.
If the new system were mine, the first thing I would do (besides protection software) is to run ALL Windows updates and then, when I think all are finished, re-boot and try running Windows updates again just to make sure.
After that I would try solving this or any other tech problem.
I am a bit lost on the TCP/IP questions, The tech gave me 4.2.2.2 and 4.2.2.3 as DNS addresses. Since I got the static IP address, I get a continuous, strong signal from the wireless adapter.
What's puzzling is that I sometimes have a very good web co0nnection for a very short time; at the third or so click of a link (or a new address), Page not Found appears again. Since
How about unplugging the USB adapter, going to Device Manager (RIGHT-click My Computer, select Properties, click HARDWARE, etc.) and locate and remove this device (logically speaking) and then close all applications and shut the system down.
While it is down, reset everything (the modem, the wireless access point) then plug in the adapter (USB) and start the PC again to have it re-discover.
Does your wireless use WEP?
What happens if you type an actual TCP/IP address?
What is your ISP?
Cox?
Verizon?
Comcast?
Earthlink?
Getting to a website generally depends on DNS
What is the address of your gateway (the router)?
Sometimes I hard-code our gateway, which uses Network Address Translation so is a fake 10.5.1.1
You MAY have to provide TCP/IP address(es) for DNS server(s) since you have hard-coded your address to the device itself.
