There is no ethernet card.  The motherboard has the network on board.  It is an Intel Pro 10/100 chipset.

Try shutting down the computer, physically installing the firewire card, then when you boot, try clearing NVRAM -  boot to system setup by pressing F2 immediately after starting the computer. Turn on Caps Lock, Scroll Lock, Num Lock, then press Press ALT+E then ALT+F then ALT+B.

I'll give it a shot.  Does this work for a 4700?  From the sites that I saw it looks like the 4700 has to have the NVRAM setting reset by a jumper on the motherboard.

What does clearing NVRAM do anyway?

You're right, the keyboard procedure may not workk for the 4700.  See the following:

This clears the configuration settings and forces the BIOS to redetect all devices.  It should do no harm.

It looks like that worked!  although now it complains on boot up that it can't find drive 1.  If I press F1 and continue it boots fine.
