I have a Dimension 4700 running xp sp2. I purchased a firewire card and installed it. When I boot the machine my firewire card works just fine but my network doesn't connect to my network. I'm linking the computer to a d-link router which connects to a comcast cable modem. If I remove the firewire card the network works.
Try shutting down the computer, physically installing the firewire card, then when you boot, try clearing NVRAM - boot to system setup by pressing F2 immediately after starting the computer. Turn on Caps Lock, Scroll Lock, Num Lock, then press Press ALT+E then ALT+F then ALT+B.
I'll give it a shot. Does this work for a 4700? From the sites that I saw it looks like the 4700 has to have the NVRAM setting reset by a jumper on the motherboard.
