Most programs can't acces internet

Most of my miscellaneous programs including Internet explorer and iTunes are not allowed access to the internet. However, Mozilla and Guild Wars have no problems. Internet explorer says everything's FORBIDEN. iTunes gives a similar error.

I've contacted my internet provider, Comcast, and they don't have an answer. I have uninstaled McAfee and the problem persisted, even with Windows firewall off. I looked through the Services.msc list, and it appears that Windows Firewall is the only one I have. It allows the programs that have the problems.

I have also posted this same topic in the Hardware, and on their advice, here and software forums to reach more help.

I had no problems when in the University dorms, but it all started here in my new appartment.

Please help! I want to use my programs!

And my computer is an XPS 600 with Windows XP.

A friend has alerted me to the option of port forwarding. Is that something I should try?

I just went into my network connections and tried to tell it to repair, just to see if it would help.

    There are two options there:
    Local Area Connection 5
    1394 Connection 2

Connection 5 repaired fine, but connection 2 gave me the following error:
TCP/IP is not enabled for this connection.

Could this be causing my problem?

The 1394 connection is your firewire port which is not normally used in networking.  This is not the cause of your problem.  Port Forwarding is not the solution either.  You must have some other security program blocking the connection.  Try setting the security settings in Internet Options to the default levels.  If that doesn't fix it,, try booting to Safe Mode with Networking and see that fixes things.  If it does, then you know that something running from startup is blocking the connections.

Ok, so I ran in Safe Mode with Networking, and the problem persisted.

    What does this mean?

And thanks for the help. This restriction is driving me nuts.

The error messages I receive are as follows:

    Internet explorer:
    Forbidden
You don't have permission to access http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=74005 on this server.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Apache Server at go.microsoft.com Port 8100

    iTunes:
iTunes could not connect to the iTunes store. You do not have permission to access the requested source.
Make sure your network connection is active and try again.

Windows Messenger suggests (upon attempting to troubleshoot the problem) that the proxy or firewall settings might be adjusted improperly.

I haven't had access to the internet on this machine for about 3 months before getting high speed at the end of summer. The service I had was the LAN at the university dorms. Maybe some setting their software applied could be affecting this? I had no problems with them.

If it is the same in Safe Mode, it means that programs running from startup are not blocking your connections.   It still indicates that some security setting has been enabled.   Try setting the internet security options to their default settings, and make sure that you have not enabled Content Advisor or Parental Controls.  You have messsed up some setting and you need to find out what you messed up.   What is the full and exact text of the error message your receive when ou can't access the internet?

Alternatively you could try using System Restore to restore your computer to a time when it was working properly or, you take the extreme step of reinstalling Windows.

Try this - open Internet Explorer and click on Tools > Internet Options, then click on the Connections tab.  Click on the LAN settings button, and on the page that loads make sure there are no check marks in any of the boxes.  Close it out and now see if it works.

It's working!!!! Thank you very much! I could hug you if I knew where you were.

One last favor though, if it isn't too much to explain, what was that and how did it hinder me?

The box I unchecked was "Use a proxy server for your LAN."

You were apparently accessing the internet through a proxy server at your previous location - see definition - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proxy_server

Since you are cannot access that proxy server to make the connection to the internet from your new location, your requests were just going to the non-existent proxy server and not reaching the rest of the internet.

Why your previous location required the use of a proxy server is for them to explain.  In some cases it can make accessing the internet faster, but it causes all kinds of problems (like you just experienced) when computers get set up this and then move to a differerent location.
