Network cable unplugged message
I have a Dimension 8300. When I connect the LAN cable to the modem (I have to keep switching the cables because I have two computers and no router), after a variable period of time (a few minutes to several hours) I get a message saying the network cable is unplugged, even though it isn't. I have to unplug the modem and plug it in again in order to get the internet to work. This has happened with 2 modems, albeit the same models. It doesn't seem to happen as often, or at all, if the computer is off when I change the cables. This has been going on for a while now. What's up?

The modem is responding correctly. To run under your scenario, you will have to power down the modem to clear the cache. I know I'm very good at spending other peoples money, but routers can be had for around $20 after rebates now, especially 802.11b wireless routers.
That will be your only fix.
