Network setup help needed w/ home & office; win98SE and XP Pro
I have setup my Linksys G wireless router (w/speedboost) on a win98SE machine (soon to go home to my son for a home LAN) with my XPS @ the office via wireless. I can (after 2 hours on the phone with Linksys) log in to the office LAN fine for internet access, but I can't find the root on the 98SE machine to transfer/copy files. I am the administrator on both machines. I have indicated in 98SE that I want to share files/printers. I have indicated in folders properties that the root is to be shared on the LAN. What next? When I get this resolved, will I have the same problem when I bring the new dimension 8400 in w/XP Pro into the office to replace it?
- Haven't had a chance to try your advice yet but I just wanted to say THANKS for the help. That problem is moot for now though. I am upgrading the system from XP Home to XP Pro and after getting into the upgrade halfway, it tells me the CD is no good. Now I can't get into the XPS at all, and am waiting on a new CD (to see if I can finish the upgrade or start over with a clean install. God forbid.)I will try your info as soon as I get the system back up and running (or punt it into the parking lot).

The following are the main things to check if you are having trouble with Windows XP and Windows 98/ME networks:
1. Make sure all computers are in the same workgroup and have unique names on the network
2. On any computer running Windows XP with SP1, disable the Windows XP firewall. It will not allow File and Printer Sharing. On computers running Windows XP with SP2, make sure that the Windows XP firewall has File and Printer Sharing checked off on the Exceptions tab. If you are running any third party firewalls, like those provided by such programs as Zone Alarm, Norton Internet Security, or McAfee Security Center, make sure they are configured to allow local network traffic.
3. Make sure the NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on all computers.
4. Make sure File and Printer Sharing is enabled on all computers.
5. Make sure the drives and folders have been designated as shared.
6. If the Windows 98/ME computers have Client for Microsoft Networks as the primary network logon, make sure that the proper username and password are entered when these machines boot. If Windows logon is the primary network logon, make sure that either a null password is used or that the correct password is used when booting these computers.
