Power on with universal hub
Dell specific hubs have a power on button which is very useful, while the dell universal hub doesn't have this. My question is how do people deal with this? Are there any alternatives to needing to always have you laptop open to power on? Are there any hardware buttons that could be used to power on without opening the laptop lid?

You need power button, you can use a docking station instead of a hub. Most of Dell docking stations do have power button.
