problem with LAN driver

I just got the Dell Inspiron R15 with windows 7, and I cannot connect to the internet when I plug in my rj45 cable from my Smartax MT882 Modem.  Now whenever I plug it up to other computers that have xp, it comes on to the net perfectly, but whenever I plug it in the R15 it doesn't get detected.

There is no blinking in the cable or the laptop. It simply fails to detect.

I do not know which driver to install. Although i tried the "latest" ethernet drivers from the dell driver page.

Can someone please help me out

Thank you

I checked them as well. There is no problem with that, as a matter of fact i uninstalled McAfee to make sure. Still no response.

If anybody could help me find the right driver, it would be of great help.

Does this have anything to do with the fact that my modem is a really old one (almost 6 years old)? It runs on 32 bit machines as far as i have observed.

Is 64 bit compatibility an issue? I tried running my driver installation CD of the modem in  Win XP 32 bit compatibility mode as well. That hasn't worked either.

I get  a message asking me to reboot my system and even after rebooting i get the same message.
