Problems installing network driver on Dimension 8300/Windows 2000 Server
My new Dell Dimension 8300 came with XP Home installed. The network adapter functioned properly, the adapter was recognized as Intel PRO/100 VE Network Connection.
I am now in the process of installing Windows 2000 Server on this machine (a clean install). The drivers for the network adapter on the resource CD (Intel 10/100 LOM Rev: A05-00) don't seem to work on Windows 2000. The drivers seem to be specific for XP (they are located in the directory "...\R58277\WinXp\Setup.exe").
On the downloads site for the dimension 8300 there are no Network drivers for Windows 2000.
My first guess is the BIOS for the 8300 machine will not support 2000 but would support 2003. Why spend the money on an 8300 to run as a server when you could setup a server for half what the 8300 costs? Just curious.
On the driverguide I found a link to Intel. On Intel I searched for drivers for the "Intel desktop board D875PBZ". I downloaded the file: "pro_v8.0_65293_win2kxp.exe", version: 8.0.65293, date: 20-jun-2003. This file contains the drivers for Windows 2000 and XP. The driver installed without any problems on Windows 2000 Server.
THANK YOU, Frans, for posting your solution. Like you, I have a Dell Dimension 8300, which comes with Windows XP, which I refuse to use. I installed Win2K Pro (not server), and then discovered (oops!) that Dell doesn't support Win2K on this machine...NO drivers on Dell's website for the video card, the ethernet controller, or the USB controller. I tried half a dozen Intel drivers for various flavors of EtherExpress without success, and then saw your post. The driver you found works just fine under Win2K Pro...thanks; I was almost ready to give up.
