unable to renew ip address
i am trying to connect to the internet by usb cable directly to a high speed internet modem. i have talked to the internet service provider twice and the problem seems to lie in the desktop i'm trying to connect from. i have no problem connecting on the same modem with another computer. i've tried pinging through the command prompt and there is no ip address or subnet. when i try to manually enter these numbers, it appears to be connecting (i can get to the home page of website), but won't let me go any further online, and eventually kicks me offline. i've tried restarting the computer and modem and that does no good
please help!
Try THIS. See if any of the errors they mention apply to you and if so, you can follow the directions. But read it carefully as it resets the winsock files and will delete several third party LSP's. The netsh winsock reset catalog command is probalby the easiest part of the instructions. But as I have said, read it, see if it applies and follow the instructions. They also give you some warnings so make sure you are aware of them.

Using a USB Cable for an internet connection is not very reliable. You should be able to plug an ethernet cable in the back of the cable modem and the plug the ethernet cable into the computer.
