I'm having a problem with the wifi connection in a vista laptop. Inspiron 1501, Vista Ultimate,2gb ram. It has good resources and the signal is good but this computer, as well as another laptop I have that was with vista. Now under Xp it runs great with no problem and never drops the wifi, so I'm guessing this problem is a vista problem.
what can be going on? We have a small home office with 3 computers. 2 laptops (1 Vista and 1 XP now), 1 desktop vista. The desktop works ok, but thevista laptop is the only one dropping the wifi connection. I read around here that it had something to do with the firewall, but don't see how to fix it.
Can anybody help me pls??? I'm actually considering downgrading to XP on this laptop like I did on mine.
Does your issue sound familiar to one I posted earlier? See http://www.dellcommunity.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=netwkint&thread.id=34035 for more details.
By defualt, the Vista firewall is set to drop "Echo Requests" (pings) from a router. The wireless router is pinging the client to make sure it is still there in order to continue sending the signal.
In XP, this is an easy fix, however......within Vista you must creat a firewall exception rule to allow ICMP (Internet Connectivity Mgt Protocol) requests. Google that and you will see how it is done.
If you are uncomfortable with this, create a restore point before you begin and a reversion back to that poitn will be easy.
