Wireless connection for my labtop

Hi everybody if you have any advice for me i would great appreciate it.  I just bought a new laptop,  so i bought a router for it and my regular computer.  I also got the wireless card for the labtop and everything works fine when i am home but when i take it out somewhere i loose signal.  Is that normal or is something i have hooked up wrong or does it just loose signal after a certain distance.  I am brand new with this so if anybody has any helpful tips or answers for me that would be great.

Thanks,
Tackleberry

Wireless routers have a maximum range of about 300 feet under ideal conditions. The number of walls, cielings, density of walls, bushes, trees, etc. all reduce the range.
