Optiplex 755 wont' start
My Optiplex 755 is a great machine but the last few months it has refused to start. Dell suggests removing the battery, unplugging the power and pressing the start button for 20-30 seconds in order the drain any remaining power on the pc. (Unfortunately, Dell doesn't make any suggestions what the problem could be).
Although a hassle it started the first several times I did this. Now, I'm done this several more times and it won't start at all. I have noticed the blinking amber light and when I depress start it stops (as though the power has been drained??). The battery is new. Even then, it won't start. I can't spend lots of money on it so i can't experiment too much with possible hardware solutions.
Is it possibly as simple as replacing the power supply?

It could be the power supply, the motherboard or even the front panel switch. There's no sure way of testing to see which one is the problem, just replacing parts with known good parts. Based on what you have reported if you want to do it I would start with the power supply. On the other hand, a 2007 era PC is really not worth investing $$ in it.

Blinking amber power light means bad PSU. Steady amber would mean bad MB.

It is quite likely the power supply unit has failed. Typically it dies gradually over a short period of time making it harder and harder to start up. If it is MT any standard ATX psu replacement would do. I had one MT that had dead psu. I got a really old Dell dimension tower psu to replace it. On eBay you can get one for $15-20. If it is DT or SFF you have to get Dell proprietary psu small form factor.
