Hi there, My 12 year old son is desperate for a gaming computer, it's on his Christmas list. As this isn't financially possible, we were discussing other options. We have an old Optiplex 780 in the loft. How possible is this to upgrade parts to enable him to play games such as COD etc? We've been researching whether to build from scratch or upgrade this one. But I'm not sure whether the upgrades available will still be good enough for his requirements. For reference we have a desktop version. Please could someone give me a complete idiots comment on if we replace so many parts then this will be ok. He is also looking at getting a new case for it - one of those see-through ones with the lights! Is this do-able or would it be better to either build from scratch or save up longer and buy one? Honest replies please. I have a very small amount of knowledge but am quite practical (fixed gaming consoles, laptops, mobile phones.....youtube tutorials are a life saver) so although I'm not good with the technical names, I can follow instructions!!
Difficult to move 780 dt components to see through case because 780 uses btx motherboard while most cases support ATX only. Btx and ATX are like left and right handed which are incompatible.
you can add a low profile gtx 1650 to 780 DT and see how it plays. if possible upgrade cpu to core 2 quad such as q9650. otoh, may be more economical in the end to buy a used optiplex 790, 7010, or 7020 than upgrading cpu in 780. Those all use ATX board and can be moved to see thru case while supporting faster cpu intel 2nd through 4th gen. The cpu in 780 is older than intel core cpu 1st gen to give you an idea.

the core 2 duo cpu in 780 is too weak for gaming.
COD system requirement here https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/news/call-of-duty-modern-warfare-2019-system-requirements/
