I currently have an Optiplex 790 SFF with a single Nvidia NVS 510. I want to be able to put 2 of these graphics cards in the computer, but there's a power issue that won't allow it to boot with both graphics cards installed.
My questions are:
1) Is this a MoBo limitation of the power delivery to the 2 PCIe x16 slots?
Or
2) Is this a 240w PSU limitation that could be overcame by putting in a 400W SFF PSU?
I'm needing to run 2 GPUs as I have 3 monitors hooked up, and one of them is a 43" Ultrawide and with all 3 hooked up, the GPU struggles to display the 3840x1200 resolution of the Ultrawide. So i'm wanting to put one GPU dedicated to the Ultrawide.
***Note*** The Nvidia NVS 510 does NOT have a PCIe Power plug on it! They draw power through the PCIe Slot.
A Dell 240w PSU can still handle 70w for GPU card(s). However, all models of the 790 only have 1 PCI-e x16 slot, except the USFF, which has 0. The 2nd one on your MB is x4, and may be where the problem lies.
We tried reaching you on a private message but did not receive a response. Please feel free to reply to the private message whenever you are available.
the private message was asking for the service tag, that i responded to saying that i don't have one, because I pieced together dell parts to build this system, based off of an Optiplex 790 chassis and MoBo. Secondly, this is a general quest for Optiplex 790 MoBo/PSU capabilities/limitations so a service tag should NOT be required to get a response about it.
thank you Bradthetechnut very much for that explanation. I did get in touch with Nvidia, and they explained that the NVS 510 uses Kepler Technology and thus requires a full x16 speed to run and won't run in an x4 or x8 mode, Thus is why 2 NVS 510 cards won't work on this MoBo.
