I use a USB wifi adapter. They are widely available, very small and work well. Most of them use a realtech chip. I bought 2 of them on ebay for about $1 each, but had to wait couple of weeks (mailed from china). US sellers cost a little more, but you'll get it faster.

WiFi cards are universal - meant to work in most computers.  A person can just key in "WiFi card" for a search term at amazon, eBay, Walmart.com, or Google like I did.

One thing to watch for is 2 sized slot cover plates.  The card I linked has the larger one for MT's.  Smaller computers take the smaller ones (unless they're so small they don't have expansion slots).

buy one with external antenna if RANGE matters to you and SPEED< buy wifi AC spec, card.

but AC routers are best,  (at the least)

and matching card, with antenna this has max range using a real ext, Antenna, (pair)

these cards work far better than any USB type and no external Antenna.

faster and further they go that is why they make these cards (cards not sticks).

both are plug and play,  so IS MOOT .

what matters is RANGE AND SPEED. and for sure BOTH at same time. (performance matters)

there are vast choices,  what works best for will never be solved,

where is your router, or AP.. 1 floor up? 

you did say card so cards were shown,  and there are vast  makers and variants of both types.
