Go to SolutionOptiplex SFF serial port
7040-7090 MT/SFF have built in integrated serial port, so no need to optional serial port (except for optional low profile serial card in PCIe slot)
7000/3000 and newer Dell optiplex (D10 chassis or newer) do not have the integrated serial port, so an optional serial port is offered

KMW3T has a 24-1 connector to motherboard
one user confused the serial card for 7000 SFF w the card for 7000 MFF (micro), the latter card has a slim connector
CRD, PORT, SERIAL, MICRO, D10

it seems the integrated serial port is only offered in high end or mid range Optiplex ##40-##90 such as 7040/5040 etc. it is not offered in low end 3040/3090. therefore Dell offered the optional serial card for those low end model too.

the optiplex micro (MFF) KB MS serial header is smaller 24 pin befitting micro motherboard

Interesting.
Yeah, I suppose some might still need a RS-232 Serial port for some (old school) industrial automation. Get it pre-installed.
But if you are trying to do this after-the-fact ... I would just buy an external-dongle that simply plugs into a USB-port. IIRC, 9600 baud, 8-N-1 is the most compatible setting.

on the motherboard there is a 24-1 pin header called KB MS serial for the serial card (apparently this is old tech Dell revamped, the same header was present for old Optiplex 3020)
