power outage transfer time poweredge 6850 specification

I have two poweredge 6850s restarting unexpectedly when the power flickers.  During the power flicker, most of the PCs in the office ran fine.  Just the 2 servers that was attached to this UPS goes down.  The UPS is an APC  DLA3000RMT2U 208V.  The DLA3000RMT2U's transfer time is 2-4 milliseconds when power outages occur.  There is 1000 milliseconds in a second.  How do I find out the transfer time of the 6850?  

Another thing, when power goes off for more than a second the servers stays on.  Only when we have these really fast blackout is when the servers restart.  So I don't thing the transfer time is the problem but APC is suspecting so.

    Yes, "somewhat" redundancy, obviously if you have a total blackout or all phases are switched all at once, it does not help; since rigging my client's server rooms this way I have had far less issues,especially with voltage drop outs (split second to a few minute power outages). less anomalies hit both PSs at the same time with this.

    Checked Ebay, few surge or line conditioners at a decent price, came up with one, a line conditioner suitable for one 208 circuit, very heavy so I am guessing isolation transformer, isolation transformers are excellent for catching power anomalies, these are originally  expensive for this size ..

    It is not "transfer time", more of how much capacitance the power supply has, which maintains power for very brief periods of power loss, how robust the filters in the power supply, motherboard and the APC are, and the specs of the motherboard as to the parameter the mobo uses to decide to "roll over".

    Sound like this is not a transfer time issue but a power  anomaly, spike, surge or harmonics etc getting through to the mobo ( or a component such as a video circuit), and it reacting by rolling over. From the spec sound like the APC unit provides minimal protection, 480 joules is bare minimum, I assume the rest of the circuit is not any better. If you want to add a suppressor, look for one which has MOVs, along with  TVSs, and or gas discharge tube. Purely MOVs based protectors are sufficient

    Have seen this issue caused by batteries which are nearing their life span, new batteries corrected issue. Battery life could be a few months or years depending greatly upon how long they sit on storage shelf before they are used, so they could be near there life span even if purchased within months. As a note , I replace all UPS batteries from

    pcmeiners, thanks for the info.  I failed to mention that we have a basic AP9566 between the UPS and the servers, but I don't think this strip provides any protection.  

    I briefly looked up some 208V suppressors.  I was hoping this was like the 120V suppressors where we could just plug one end to the wall and the other end would go to the UPS, but it seems we need an electrician to hook these 208V suppressor up.  The outlet is NEMA L6-30P, NEMA L6-20P.  Maybe we should try for another UPS?

    This is the second UPS with the same problem.  The battery pack came with the second replacement.

    208 ( a 240v suppressor could be used) suppressors are less common as they are more for commercial use, picked up a few really good  suppressors on Ebay, but as of late the prices have gone up to unreasonable levels. Not sure even with a commercial suppressor, the issue would cease, mobo circuits can be extremely sensitive to anomalies. Via the UPS software you might try adjusting the voltage sensitivities.making the APC unit bit more sensitive, The power strip should not be an issue.

    Went over the 6850 specs fairly large power supplies. What else beside the two 6850 do you have on the connected to the UPS? According to the APC configurator , placing two 6850s, alone would be pushing one DLA3000 unit. APC shows one 3000 va unit per server.

    There are power monitoring devices which log all anomalies which can be rented, such as Fluke 1735

    pcmeiners I appreciate the reply.  I thought it was just the two 6850s but, I rechecked and found I have an EMC CX300 also connected to the UPS.  I'm thinking to try and move the CX300 to a 120V circuit when I can get some downtime.  I also changed the sensitivity on the UPS to high (was on low).  Powerchute is reading 44.2 % usage, 6.6 amp at 205.9v.  Overkill?  thanks!

    With proper planning you can move the CX300 to a different powersource with no downtime (just a performance impact).

    Move SPS-A and PSU-A from any attached DAEs to a different powersource while keeping the B-side plugged in where it is. Once the array is happy again (it will recharge the SPS, which will trigger a blue T on it), you move the B-side power over.

    44% load is higher then I would allow on a UPS system for my client's server, as I want the server to remain up on batteries for approx an hour without power, also higher then I would want due to the power draw surge if all equipment is started all at once, but I don't think it is the factor in the server roll over.

    If you have 208v, then it is 3 phase. 3 phase has 3 hot legs, you can have two separate 208 circuits due to the 3 legs as described in the link below. Power utility companies do not switch/adjust separate phase at the exact same time (if possible) to alleviate power anomalies. So any server room should two have circuits, feed by  using different phase leg feeds( if building is feed by multi-phase wiring with 3 hot feeds legs), placing all equipment with multiple power supplies, with one PS of the redundant devices on one phase, the other PS on the other phase circuit. If you do not understand this ask the building engineer or an electrician.

    I have all computer rooms at my larger clients setup this way. Found this out in the last major blackout in NYC , as some client's  servers stayed up, some died, all dependent upon which phase legs where used for the circuits to the servers. Con Edison (util company) did there best to maintain voltage on the phase primarily feeding commercial buildings.

    i discussed the issue with our power guy, he believes that the sensitivty setting is what was the problem. You should be good to go now that its on medium. Let us know! :)

    Thank you for the steps to move the CX300 to another power source.  Question, am I able to run the CX300 off of two UPS of different voltages?  One power supply to the 208V and the other to the 120V UPS?  Are there any dip switches to change the input power setting like I see on most computer towers?

    This is really good info.  I think you're basically saying that we can split up the three hot legs to two single phase 208V circuits.  This will somewhat provide 208V redundancy in our closet in case one of the legs go down?  We did have a power situation in the past where our 120V circuits were running okay and the 208V was the only one without power.  If I'm not getting this right, I'll try talk to an electrician.

    thanks,  I'll try keep it like this and see what happens during the next flicker.  If we are still having problems, I'll look into suppressors, taking the cx300 off of the UPS, or investing in another UPS.
