Poweredge t710 memory

Dual Processor - Current configuration:

(12) 8GB DDR3-1333 dual ranked RDIMMS

A1, A2, A3, A4, A5, A6 populated  -- A7, A8, A9 not occupied

B1, B2, B3, B4, B5, B6 populated  -- B7, B8, B9 not occupied

Memory mode: optimizer

Questions:

1. Under this configration what is the operating speed of the memory?

2. What is the maximum amount of memory that can be installed and still operate at 1333MHz?

I think that in the current configuration the memory is operating at 800 MHz.

I think that the maximum configurable amount of memory operating at 1333MHz would be 96GB with (6) 16GB RDIMMS occupying the following slots:

A1, A4, A7, B1, B4, B7

    Hello

    1. Under this configration what is the operating speed of the memory?

    1067Mhz

    2. What is the maximum amount of memory that can be installed and still operate at 1333MHz?

48GB with 8GB DIMMs populated in slots 1,2,3

I think that the maximum configurable amount of memory operating at 1333MHz would be 96GB with (6) 16GB RDIMMS occupying the following slots:

    A1, A4, A7, B1, B4, B7

All 16GB DIMMs that are validated for this system are quad rank. Populating 2 quad rank DIMMs in a bank together will run at a maximum of 800Mhz. 8GB DIMMs are the largest dual rank DIMMs that are validated.

    Thanks

Thanks for your wuick reply.  Wouldn't the memory operate at 1067 MHz in the 'better configuration' you have reccommended?  I figure that based on my reading of the following from pg. 99 of the hardware owner's manual:

The memory speed of each channel depends on the memory configuration:

    – For single or dual-rank memory modules:

    • One memory module per channel supports up to 1333 MHz.

    • Two memory modules per channel supports up to 1067 MHz.

    • Three memory modules per channel supports up to 800 MHz,

    regardless of memory module speed.

I completely rewrote my first post because of all of the errors. I was in a rush to respond and did not fully read the population rules. We had a BIOS update for the R710 to allow 1333MHz with 2 DIMMs per channel. I thought we applied the same update to the T710, but I am unable to find mention of it anywhere. It appears the tower version does not have this capability.

    Thanks

The memory speed of each channel depends on the memory configuration:

You are correct, sorry about that. The maximum speed achievable with any quad rank DIMM is 1066, so you are limited to 8GB dual rank DIMMs as a maximum size to achieve 1333MHz. Single DIMMs per channel in slots 1,2,3 on each side for a max population of 48GB.

Are you sure only qr 16gb dimms are supported? It appears dr 16gb dimms are also available. We purchased 12 of them planning to put this configuration in a couple of our T710s: 16 8 4, 16 8 4, 16 8 4 (we currently are running 8 8 4, 8 8 4, 8 8 4) Obviously speed will be limited to 800mhz in this config, but the dual rank dimms should be fine, right?

I won't say it is impossible, but I double checked the part database for the T710. There are two validated 16GB DIMMs and they are both quad rank. It is rare but sometimes validated components are not tied to all validated equipment. At this point I don't show any dual rank 16GB DIMMs validated for this server.

That configuration will be fine if all of the DIMMs are dual rank or lower. If a quad rank DIMM is populated then you can only populate two DIMMs per channel.

    Thanks

Interesting; these were pulls from an existing server. I will report back as soon as we have a chance to try them in our T710!
