Media Rotation

We are considering buying a 136T with 2 tape drives and 36 tape slots but we have concern about the media rotation. The way our backups currently run is an original job backs up all our servers to a 122T drive and after this job is completed a duplicate job runs which copies the original tapes to a second 122T drive. If we use the single 136T drive instead we are worried that there is a risk of the original tapes being used by the duplicate job instead and therefore destroying our back-up job. Does anyone know if backupexec will be intelligent to know that when it is doing a duplicate job it shouldn't overwrite the tapes that it should be duplicating ?

To be honest, I've never tried this with automated duplicate making jobs, but I don't think this will be a concern.  This is really no different that having multiple backup jobs run in general and preventing them from overwriting media that's been allocated to another backup job.

When the Veritas BEX (both 8 and 9) when the Media Set properties are set correctly (in particular overwrite period) and your backup job uses a separate Media set (see backup job settings "Device and Media") than the duplicate job there should be no conflict.  Scratch/available media will be allocated initially to populate the media pool as each job runs to conduct it's backup or duplication.  Then given that you have enough total media in general the backup/duplication jobs will overwrite/append the media in their own respective media sets based on the Media Set overwrite/append settings.

I've never seen a job "steal media" from another job's media set even it was available for overwriting.  Scratch media always gets used first.  However, I have not extensively tested this behavior -- so I would check with Veritas to be sure.  I can say, that if BEX has marked a piece of media as overwrite protected (based on the media set properties) it WILL NOT be overwritten no-matter-what unless you first erase it yourself, or the overwrite protection expires.

I have a PV136T w/3 LTO2 drives SAN attached using a SAN attached BEX9.1 media server and this has been working well for me.  I'm actually interested in setting up something similar to what you are doing with respect to automating duplicate creation.  The PV136T is great b/c it has a 12 position mailbox.  I would like to make the duplicates and the "eject" them to the mailbox so I can store them offsite.  How do you schedule automated duplicate creation?  I've only ever tried it by manually.

    Thanks,
    Jonathan

Thanks for the help on that Jon. I forgot about the different media sets so we shouldn't have any problems at all.
