We have not bought a server in about five years. The last server we bought had a tape backup. Is the PowerVault RD1000 a backup solution? If so, is it as reliable, speedy and portable as tapes are? Should we get away from tapes and start using the RD1000 disks for backup?
Our server will be for 15 users who do not do any database work just accounting software, Office programs and internet.
I'm trying to customize a T300 server with Windows SBS2008. The customizer won't let me unselect the PowerVault RD1000. Is it possible to buy the server without the RD1000?
The RD1000 is designed to be more reliable, speedy and portable than tapes. In addition the RD1000 provides forward and backward capability with new media capacities which tape typically does not. For more information about RDX/RD1000 removable disks please see the rdx storage alliance website. The resources page includes whitepapers regarding reliability of RDX/RD1000.
The only concern with the RD1000 is space. If you have several TB of data to back up every week, a tape solution (LTO-3 or higher) is a more cost efficient and faster solution.
If you only have a few 100GB or less, especially if you only have a handful of servers (or maybe even just 1 server), then an RD1000 can be a nice and easy backup solution.
