I have set static IP's in all of my 1720 printers. Are you getting lights on the back of the printer when you plug the Ethernet cable in? If your getting a 0.0.0.0 address that means it's not seeing your network period. It should pull a dyamic IP then you have to load the IP config software off the CD. after installing that open it and it will find all the network printers on your network. You can select it and then it has a button on the right that says TCP/IP settings. Click on that and you can change the IP address.

Very interesting.  Thank you.  Do I understand you to say the 1720 printer collects initially an IP address from the DHCP server, after which I may select a static address for it?

My own network has no DHCP, no ability to assign dynamically an IP address.

Perhaps I can physically transport the printer to a DHCP net some place, log into it, assign a static address, and then transport it back to my secure network?

Are you plugging this printer up to your network like a router or directly to a wall drop or are you trying to share it with an IP address from one computer to another?

Thanks to your 1st post above, Patrick, a DHCP server gave the 1720dn printer a dynamic IP address.  That gave me access with a web browser and I followed the steps you outlined, to assign a static IP address.  It's all good.

Now I need to figure out how to tell the Suns who make up the network how to print to the 1720dn as a Postscript printer.  Can't be that hard.  (right?)
