1815dn Needs Beter Network Scanning Support

When installing the network drivers it also installs the TWAIN drivers. Unfortunately no application will connect to the device (even the bundled software Paperport 10).

Additionally highest resolution scanning in col/b&w/greyscale should be available via network scanning in either a push or pull scenario.

Any ideas?

Hey, at least PCs have a network scanning option. Dell's site says Mac OS X is supported but it turns out it's only for printing and direct-attached scanning. Haven't checked to see if we can do it via shared scanning through Image Capture running on a host Mac. Could be interesting...

I just confirmed that the scanner is capable of 600 x 1200 optical resolution ONLY via USB connection. The tech rep I spoke with was awesome at trying to figure out the reason for the limitation. He was advised that this was due to bandwidth. However, a USB connection offers much less bandwidth than a typical network. Their feeling was that the data scanned would "crash" the network.

My idea: let the Admin decide what will crash the network or not. This is meant for a small business not a massive infrastructure like Dell, and in both cases the data sent is an acceptable size. Since the unit can PDF any file let it do so at full resolution. An 8 x 11.5 PDF at 600 DPI will still be approx 5megs or so. I hardly consider that bandwidth hogging. Besides, control can be implemented in which the ADMIN can limit certain IP's (or all) from using certain settings as is the case with the limiting colour printing on Dell computers to certain computers. To push the point home set the default but allow higher scans. Add a footnote to have the user acknowledge that higher scan setting could effect the network adversely.

This issue is more than relevant and I am sure this can be resolved via a firmware upgrade. Why limit the hardware via software in the first place?
