5100, network printing with server turned off?

I have a 5100 on a home network with 6 computers, 2 routers and 2 printers. How can I set up the 5100 in a "peer" mode so that there is no need to leave on one of my computers as a server. RIght now, computer ONE acts as the server. If I shut down ONE then I cannot print off of any of the others comptuers.

    Is it a 5100cn? If so just plug it into your network, assign it a static ip address, and add the software to each computer that will use it, use the tcp/ip port with the assigned ip address. If it's not network capable then you can pick up a print server, something like this:

    yes it is a 5100cn. yes I assigned a static address. i ran the install software off of the CD. I chose the IP address option and put in the name, port and address. I did this procedure on each machine. Yet, if I shut down the one that I started with... I can't print from the other machines.
     
    How do I know if I picked the correct port?? I printed a basic report and down at the bottom left there is a place that says "LPD - Port Status > On" and then "Port9100 - Port Status > On" I assumed that the port is "port9100" was this correct?? If not, how do I figure out the port?? I noticed on a previous install that the the port was "IP_192.168.0.102" with a description of "standard TCP/IP port" whereas now the port is "port9100" and the description is "DL TCP/IP DPU port"
     
    I am clueless about what ports are and how they work. thanks for you help.

    Ok, to configure the port click start, printers and faxes, right click on the Dell printer and select properties. Click the ports tab and select standard TCP/IP from the list, if TCP/IP doesn't appear in the list click add port, select standard TCP/IP port, click new port, click next, enter the IP address of the printer, click next. Windows will look for the printer, once it's found click ok and repeat on all computers that need to use the printer.

    Sorry about that... I had a power failure and all of the servers in that rack went down for about a hour. It's back up now....

     

    Glad it worked out for ya. It would be nice if the instructions would give a bit more info on setting up a tcp/ip port. It's a bit vauge....
