A computer illiterate needs your help...

Howdy! I need help deciding between an A920 & A940. Any constructive input will be greatly appreciated.

Here's some questions I have that will help me to decide:

1.) What is a Tetra & Port Economy Hub?

2.) I already have a printer cable. Do I need to purchase the Dell cable or are they universal?

3.) When printing can you use just black ink when a color cartridge is installed? (a nice option to conserve the color ink)

4.) The A920 description doesn't say that it has fax capabilities but I see topics on faxing with the A920...What's the deal here?

5.) With PC Fax can you send a document to any fax machine or does it only go to other computers?

Please take a moment to help a computer dummy. Thank You.

    Don't know.

Dell uses a USB cable, and they are universal.

3.) When printing can you use just black ink when a color cartridge is installed? (a nice option to conserve the color ink)

When you hit print, there is an options tag, just click on it and select Back & White

4.) The A920 description doesn't say that it has fax capabilities but I see topics on faxing with the A920...What's the deal here?

Not that I can see, only the A940, A922 and A960 does

5.) With PC Fax can you send a document to any fax machine or does it only go to other computers?

Any fax machine. The only real difference between the 940 and 960 is that the 960 has the modem built in. The 940 uses the computers modem.

Remember, the only dumb question is the one NOT asked.

Yes, you were very helpful Odius.  4 out of 5 is a good score. lol

Thanks for helping out a computer newb. I appreciate it.

However, check out this link to Tech Support Faq's to see why I'm confused about the A920 fax capabilities...

    http://service.dell.com/dell/kb/tech_support/view_article/1,,967+5835+6076+14703,00.html

Here's the link to customizing. Look under Photo Paper & accessories for the Tetra & Port Economy Hub options. Anyone know this one?

    http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&oc=A920&s=dhs

Only 2 more questions to go. We're almost there, so the newb will be out of your hair!

OK, I think I understand it now. The fax capabilities in the 920 is in the software, the printer is used as a scanner for the fax to send. And a printer to recieve the fax. But you computer has to be on and software running for it to work. I rarely use the A960 connected to the computer, it's main purpose for me is a fax/copie machine. I use it as a printer once in a while. But I don't print a lot. As soon as I learn how to hook up the printserver(wireless ready) and get the printer to print wirelessly, then I will use it more. Right now, 90%  of the things I print I use the bluetooth adapter in my Laptop to print on my Canon with it's bluetooth adapter.

Thanks again Odius. My next question is do you think I'll have to purchase a special program to use fax with the A920?

I also need to know if the HUB options listed in my previous post are of any importance to the fax option.

These are probably questions the Dell techs can answer, but I'll appreciate any input. Thanks.

Based upon use of my 920 since January and reading about all of the problems folks are having w/ the 940 I say go w/ the former.

Thanks for the info. I think I'll take your advice and purchase the A920. It seems to be the best deal for basic home use. Thanks again for helping a computer newb.

    Wish me luck!

My mind was made up on the A920 then you go and introduce another new printer; the 922. Now my brain hurts, thanks. lol

Well the new printer looks nice and is a good bargin. I hope you made improvements to fix some of the printer problems I've seen posted here.
