Dell 946 printer + Vista 64 bit + custom box

Hello everyone! Especially PudgyOne!

I built a new box over the holidays and finally decided to take the Vista plunge. Everything has worked fine so far until I finally decided to move my printer from my old box to this box. Needless to say, since I am here it hasn't gone too well.

I have followed PudgyOne's steps from this thread but am still having issues. Specifically, I have uninstalled several times (using R166247) and attempted to re-install several times (using R145441) and updated the firmware (using R152145).

When the software is installed, the only option I have under All Programs is Dell Printers > Dell AIO Printer 946 > Uninstall Dell AIO Printer 946. In addition, the system starts throwing fun little dialogs like "Spooler SubSystem App stopped working and was closed" and "Printer communication system stopped working."

Of course, I kind of expect those errors after installing now since everytime I attempt to re-install, it fails during the network scan with "Install GUI has stopped working."

So I have several questions:

  1. Has anyone else run across errors like these and did you eventually get past them and get it working?
  2. If so, how?
  3. I'm pretty sure that R145441 is just the drivers. If so, where do I get the All-in-One Center software? I tried installing from the original CD but that isn't working out too well either.
  4. If I am remoting into my old XP box and print a document there, why don't the Dell print dialogs display (how much ink you have left, how to rotate pages for double-sided printing, etc.)? It prints the first pass but never gives the continue dialog after you've flipped the pages.

I'm getting pretty close to the point where I might have to switch back to XP for a while (especially since I am keeping the old box running just so I can VPN/tunnel into work since we can't do it from 64-bit). Aside: My blood pressure was really high the other day and the Dr. asked if I was under a lot of stress. Nope, just dealing with computer issues.

Anyway, if anyone can help I would appreciate it.

Thanks!

    mattsmith321,

I'm glad you first tried searching the forums and Welcome. I might see what your problem is. I did a search of Dell's website and found a different version of the XP & Vista 64-bit Drivers, R145442. I'm not quite sure how you're connecting the printer, USB, wireless print server(maybe 3300) or using a host computer. Below are the instructions for a usb connection. If you need a different installation, let me know.

Please run the patch. It's like a cleaner tool and will remove all the wrong drivers you installed on your computer. MUST be run on Vista machines but also works for XP machines.

Disconnect your printer. Download and run this patch to completely remove the printer from your computer.

    Restart your computer.

    Download the proper drivers.

    XP Drivers

    Vista 32-bit Drivers

XP & Vista 64-bit Drivers (English Drivers, corrected)

    All other drivers

Install the proper drivers. You'll be prompted when to connect your printer(powered on)

    Scanning

Scanning using USB connection, open the Dell All-In-One Center, click on scanning and copying and scan from there.

Scanning wirelessly, use the scan buttons on the printer.

    Rick

Edited to show correct English 64-bit drivers

Here is what I have done:

    - Disconnected printer

    - Ran R166247 to remove everything

    - Rebooted

    - After reboot, I quit getting the printer errors

    - I verified that the Dell folders were gone from under \Program Files and \Program Files (x86).

    - Downloaded R145442

    - Ran Setup.exe

    - I'll have to get back to you in a few months. All of the dialogs were in Japanese. It will take me a while to get up to speed before I can continue. :emotion-5:

I was wondering how I could have gotten the wrong driver in the first place (R145441). Guess I didn't after all.

What else do you have in your repertoire, Rick?

Don't forget to update your 'XP & Vista 64-bit Drivers' to point to the correct download. I'm pretty sure you copy & paste that bit around on the forums here.

Also, I am connecting to the printer via USB and have tried to go through the install using the local and network options but still no luck.

    Matt,

R145442 is Japanese, correct? If so then the one you were using R145442 is English, correct? I didn't download them so I will take your word for them and correct the URL when I get home from work.

Disconnect the printer. Run the patch. Restart your computer.

Now since you have a homemade computer make sure you install these drivers. I'll help you ease the blood pressure, try using Everest Home Edition. Open it, click on computer, summary and anything that in blue, left click on it and you'll see driver download. Make sure to use the latest drivers for each.

Desktop System Software or Notebook System Software
    Chipset or SMBus driver
    Processor Driver (if applicable)
    Video
    Audio (sound)
    Input Drivers (keyboard/mouse)
    Modem
    Network Card

Make sure to go to Windows Updates and install .net framework, needed to run many applications and the latest Java.

Leaving for work, be back later. Please advise me about the 64-bit drivers so I can correct the url.

    Thanks,

    Rick

    Hi Rick,

I feel better already having you on this :emotion-22:

R145441 is English and R145442 is Japanese.

I am at work so I won't get back to this until later tonight (CST).

    Thanks. Talk to you soon.

Here is where I am at right now:

I have seen various utilities to get system info but none that provided as much detail as Everest Home Edition. I did some research, saw that it was dropped several years to focus on their commercial lines. I tried it anyway and did notice that there were several entries that weren't coming across correctly - probably because they are so new and EHE is so old. So I went ahead and found some recommended alternatives and installed PC Wizard and the trial of Everest Ultimate Edition. They both provided good info but EUE was easier to use to get to the driver links.

So, using that approach I found out that I wasn't current on my drivers in a number of areas. Here is some information on my system and some of the items that I ended up upgrading:

***** System Summary from PC Wizard 2008 *****

    GeForce Driver Release 181 WHQL
    Version: 181.22
    Release Date: January 22, 2009
    Operating System: Windows Vista 64-bit

As far as Windows Update and .NET, I'm current on WU and have the following .NET frameworks installed:

    - v1.0.3705
    - v1.1.4322
    - v2.0.50727 (x86 & x64)
    - v3.0 (x86 & x64)
    - v3.5 (x86 & x64)

For Java, I verified my Java version : You have the recommended Java installed (Version 6 Update 11).

OK, so with all of that taken care of, let's see how installing R145441 goes! Getting excited. Surely one of those things fixed the problem.

First pass, I chose to go with the Network Installation:

    - Did the same thing - Dies with the same "Install GUI has stopped working" when it tries to scan the network.

Uninstall everything with the Clean Up utility, reboot.

Second pass, but for local print:

    - Install goes fine until it asks for the printer to be connected to continue. The system beeps to recognize that a USB device was plugged in. Almost immediately the message at the bottom right corner says "Device driver did not install properly". However the install window is still continuing. Then, it starts popping up the "Printer communication has stopped working" and "Spooler subsystem app has stopped working" windows. This time I don't click cancel and let the installer finish. Not looking too good.

I reboot, wait a minute or so and then the error windows start popping up again about the printer & spooler stuff not working. I checked in services and the print spooler was not running. If I start it, it dies. Also when I go to the available printers, nothing is listed.

So, I decided to Google on print spooler error message and came up with some interesting threads:

    - Vista -- print spooler service constantly stops. I cannot print.

That thread led me to You cannot add a printer and you receive printer spooler error messages in Windows XP

It seems like there might be something in there that I can pursue. Unfortunately I fell asleep in my chair before I could try anything. I'll give it a shot today.

    The sage continues...

    Matt,

I like the second link, the printer was made by Lexmark and has the Dell brand name on it, if that helps.

Start, run or hit the Windows Key and the R Key at the same time. Type

    services.msc

hit enter look at the print spooler and make sure it's set for automatic. Restart the service. Also look foe something in the d, like dlcj or something similar. This should be for your printer.

Disable the LexBce Server service if it's there, it sounds like the culprit. Also with the printer still disconnected, run the patch, restart the computer. Make sure the printer driver was removed.

    Printers and Faxes

    File

    Server Properties

    Drivers

Remove the driver you want to remove.

If you remove a driver, restart your computer. I found these two almost identicle articles and they seem similar. Article 1 and article 2. I have also seen issues where the USB ports didn't install properly. I usually recommend doing this but if you have a desktop, I don't know how to tell which one the mouse is. I also heard other people going into the Bios and checking to make sure the settings are correct for the USB Ports to work. Remember 4ft or less USB cable.

Go to device manager(right click my computer, left click properties, left click hardware, left click device manager)

Go to the USB Controller section and click the + sign.

Starting at the bottom, USB Root Hubs, and working your way to the top, USB Universal Controllers, un-install everything in that section.

Restart your computer. Windows will find everything again and correct the problem one. Please be patient. The new hardware wizard may work 3-5 minutes before it's done.

I ramble a lot, so forgive me. I also found an older version of a XP 64-bit driver for the 946 printer, maybe this driver will work.

Let me know your progress, I'll be waiting for a reply.

    Rick

    Matt,

Also download and run Belarc Advisor and see if everything looks like it's installed correctly. I also use Secunia and File Hippo Update Checker stand alone version. Maybe these programs will find something that's not updated.

I don't really like using them but I also have used a registry cleaner. The one I use is called jv16 Power tools. Download it and open it. Click on registry, tools, registry cleaner, continue, start. When scan is complete, click on select, special select, items that should be safe to remove. Click remove. If it doesn't remove anything, restart the computer for a second try.

I have also used Windows Installer CleanUp Utility to remove those probem programs but not sure if it works with Vista or not.

Thanks Rick. Here is what I have done since my last post but before I saw your posts:

I kind of skimmed through the steps in the You cannot add a printer and you receive printer spooler error messages in Windows XP article and here is what I saw (except using the x64 folder in the registry)

    1) First, remove Windows NT subkeys - I only had subkeys for Drivers & Print Processors so I did not have to delete anything

    2) Second, remove registry entries for printer drivers - I only had three drivers listed: Microsoft Shared Fax Driver, Microsoft XPS Document Writer, and Snagit 9 Printer. I left them all there since I think they are all good.

    3) Third, remove registry entries for default print monitors - There was an entry for Dell AIO 946 which I deleted.

Then I went through the install process again and got the same results as before. [:'(]

So, right now I am working through the registry to see what kind of junk is out there. I am using RegAlyzer from the guys that made Spybot S&D. I found it and some other cleaners that I will probably try (and yours) on Lifehacker.com (which is a great site for finding vetted utilities with minimal fear of adware, crapware, etc.)

Here are the entries that came up for a search on Dell:

    ; Search results from 1/24/2009 10:35:43 AM
; Search style: Simple substring search
    ; Search for: dell
; Search for keys that are of any date.
; Search focus: Keys, Values, Data
    ; Data types: Strings, Numerics
    ; Search range: &Whole registry

Most of them are harmless but I need to look at them and also do some searches based on the CLSIDs and also 'AIO' to see what comes up.

I will get take a look at your suggestions in more detail shortly.
