Docking Station - Printer Problem - How to Escalate?
I have had the below problem viewed over 134 times in 3 posts. Apparently no one has any resolutions so far. Could anyone tell me how I could escalate this problem to Dell? Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thank you.
Stated Problem:
I have a Latitude D610, XP Pro and Docking Station purchased in Feb. 2005. Until this week, I have not had this problem and have made no system or configuration changes. When the D610 is in the Docking Station, I go to print and a balloon Information message pops up from my System Tray "This Document Failed to Print" w/time and printer model #.
In troubleshooting, I confirmed that I had the latest print driver, deinstalled and reinstalled the LPT 1 port and then I powered down, removed my PC from the Docking Station, connected my HP LaserJet 4L directly to the LPT 1 port, did a Cold Start and my printer worked correctly.
I then inspected both the male and female connectors on the PC and Docking Station, insured that they were clean and undamaged, reconnected my HP Printer to the Docking Station, placed the PC back in the Docking Station and still got the same message as above. All my other devices attached to the Docking Station worked correctly including wireless keyboard/mouse, display, Epson InkJet printer attached via a USB port and remote mike and speakers.
From what I'm reading in your post, There is no problem with your Dell Latitude D160. It works with everything connected, except the HP LaserJet 4L.

I'm thinking that your HP LaserJet 4L somehow got the drivers messed up or something. I have installed my printer 2 times. One for when I use the USB connection and One for when I Print wirelessly, I use a Dell Wireless Print Adapter 3300. I renamed one wireless so I can tell the difference. I was also thinking there may be more than one printer listed in printers ad faxes and it's trying to connect to the wrong printer and/or it's offline and needs to be turned on when you put it in the docking station. It may have accidentally got turned off or a Windows Update may have caused a problem.
So that leave us to work on your printer. Since it has been removed and re-installed, lets start from scratch.
Connect your Latitude to the Docking Station. Disconnect your HP LaserJet 4L. Un-install the printer from your system. Check the control panel and make sure it's gone from add/remove programs, also. Restart your computer.
Now go to here and download the most current drivers for your HP LaserJet 4L. Install the drivers. You'll be prompter when to connect it. Print your test page and make sure everything works.
Restart your computer. Now try it one more time on printing. Now remove the Latitude from the docking station and then try what you usually do.
Again, thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately, I followed your instructions and the same message appeared as before from the System Tray "the document failed to print" I did run my Dell diagnostics for my parallel port and it resulted in the Dell Error Code 3D00:0421 Msg: Timeout error waiting for the printer. Status Error (8000h). I have Googled the error code and it just give me the Dell description. I have also searched this forum with no results. At this point is there anyway you know to address this with Dell or anyone else without paying the $59 for a support call? Thanks, Bill
