i have a similar problem, after browsing the wed i have found out that a firmware upgrade will probably sort this, LG (the drive manufacturer) however say that that their downloadable upgrade shouldn't be used on oem (dell) drives and to contact dell, any ideas anyone, will their upgrade work or are they correct
I also found such a driver, but it did not solve the problem. I have never solved it and eventhough I had gold support, I was not able to get this fixed over Dell. I have also never found documentation of a patch file in the Dell support downloads.
It is a known problem, but Dell has not solved it as far as I can tell. If Dell has any solution on this, it would be great if Dell support could direct to it from the forum.
As this has not happened, I assume there is not a solution. Since then, I've gotten other computers from other suppliers.
I had the same problem.. Yellow exclamation mark with error message saying driver missing or corrupt (error 39)
I had to delete some registry settings to fix it
Start Registry Editor (Start, Run and type in regedit then click)
Find " UpperFilters" and " LowerFilters" (and " UpperFilters.bak" " LowerFilters.bak", if they exist) value under the following key in the registry, and delete it:
I did delete both registry settings (UpperFilters" and "LowerFilters") and when re-booting the explorer does identify that the drive is there, so that is an improvement. But it cannot read a disk. I've tried a few and each time it says to insert a disk when one is already inserted.
The hardward property tells me that this is a LH/DT/ST CD/RW GCE/8481B DVD/CD/ROM drive.
you said you tried installing a driver for this drive already..
In device manager, try rolling back the driver.. if that doesnt work or it says there isnt any, right click the drive --> choose uninstall then reboot.. when you restart the PC should pick it up again
No worries. Had the same problem myself with a precision that was a week old.. Spoke to a Dell techie and his solution was to format my machine (as usual).. Told him where to go and eventually found the solution.
Ok so I ran into this problem as well.... however after deleteing the offending registry errors and doing a reboot I too saw the drives but was not able to get them to work. I attempted doing both a rollback and fully deleting the drivers and rebooting however niether of these fixes worked for me. I still cant seem to get my dvd or cd-rw drives to read anything at all. I am at my wits end with this computer and have had nuthing but problems with it from the get go. I assure you that I will continue to do what I can to repair this machine but I will NEVER buy another dell again...not if my life depended on it as thier tech support is horrible (sorry, but formatting my entire computer is not the solution to every little problem). I have gotten more help from fellows users then i have anyone working with dell (and to think i spent all that extra hard earned cash on the extra tech support).
Please I implore you, if anyone has any other suggestion please help me
