Dell Support Center

I bought a Dell XPS 8500 desktop with Windows 7 Professional (64 bit version) and it came preloaded with the Dell Support Center software.  All of a sudden I am getting the following message when I try to bring up the program.

License Authentication Failed.  This version of Dell Support Center is not licensed to run on this system.

The program ran successfully when I first bought the desktop but for some apparent reason I now get this message.  I have tried to uninstall and reinstall the program but get the same results whenever I try to run the program.  The Dell website says the program should run on the XPS 8500.  Any solution to this problem.  Otherwise I might just as well unistall the program and forget about it.

    Hello Ron,

I stand corrected, according to the information on the BIOS update page, the 470 is one of the supported systems.  <<www.dell.com/.../DriverDetails  "XPS 8500,VOSTRO 470 A09 BIOS "

    Hello Ron,

You are describing the same issue we saw in our lab with the 8500 and BIOS A06.  Unfortunately I am not aware of a BIOS update for your Vostro 470 to address your issue.

    Hi,

I suggest you to follow the steps below to resolve the issue with Dell Support Center:

    1. Click Start and type Services.msc
    2. Check the services – Windows Management Instrumentation  and WMI Performance Adapter – they should be started and set for automatic startup
    3. If the WMI services are not enabled or running, please enable them and open Dell Support Center.

Also,  please let us know if you received any notification about any update for Dell Support Center.

    Please reply.

    Thanks and Regards

    Priyanka,

I followed your steps to open Services, I see "Windows Management Instrumentation" is "Started Automatic" but I do not see anything about "WMI Performance Adapter".

I opened the Windows Event Viewer and noticed the following in WindowsLogs > Application

    Log Name:      Application

    Source:        PC-Doctor Launcher

    Date:          10/3/2012 1:13:59 PM

    Event ID:      1

    Task Category: None

    Level:         Information

    Keywords:      Classic

    User:          N/A

    Computer:      W7-MePo

    Description:

The description for Event ID 1 from source PC-Doctor Launcher cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.

The following information was included with the event:

PC-Doctor will now attempt to launch

    Event Xml:

    ">schemas.microsoft.com/.../event">

    Hello Steve,

What BIOS version do you have on your 8500?  We have had reports of similar issues with the 8500 and BIOS revision A06.  BIOS A09 is available at <<http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/DriverDetails/Product/xps-8500?driverId=4RR90&osCode=W764&fileId=3011723260>>.  We have confirmed, in our lab, that the Licensed Authentication failure was no longer given on our 8500 following the update.

I also see the same problem on a Vostro 470, "Dell Support Center is not licensed to run". If I reboot the support center will run until the system goes to "sleep". When I resume I get the error message each time I try to start thesupport center until a reboot. Very strange

    Hi,

Please confirm if you restarted WMI Performance Adapter and set it to automatic?
Once done, please restart Dell Support Center and check if issue is resolved.

    Please reply.

I double checked the windows Services and found WMI Performance Adapter it was set for manual.I must have overlooked it the 1st time. Did a "right click" > properties, set startup = Auto, "apply". Then did a reboot. Support Center works after a reboot, after a manual sleep (10-30 sec) and resume still gets the "License Authentication" error.

I looked at services, it shows WMI Performance Adapter = Auto and Started. Looked at System Configuration > Services and it shows WMI Performance Adapter is running.

Repeated this for 2 more reboots, always see the same situation, WMI Performance Adapter is auto/running, Dell Support Center works after a reboot but fails after a sleep/resume.
